Collier Agrees to Provide School Resource Officers

Collier Township has agreed to provide “school resource officers” for the Chartiers Valley middle/high school and primary campuses. Find out when they could being walking the halls of the schools.

Collier Township agreed to provide “school resource officers” for the Chartiers Valley middle/high school and primary campuses, and they could begin walking the halls as early as February. The commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve a contract with the school district that outlines the roles of the police officers, who commands them and reimbursement to the township. This comes just a week after the township appeared to be taking its time to study the issue despite several area residents urging the commissioners to hire the school resource officers. Township Manager Sal Sirabella said they weren’t far from agreeing to the program, but a variety of factors accelerated the agreement. “It was a lot of work done between the …

Residents Urge Collier Township to Hire School Resource Officer

But Collier officials said they want to “get it right” and probably won’t make a decision on the school security program for another two months.

At Collier Township’s voting meeting last week, several area residents urged municipal officials to immediately install a school resource officer at the middle/high and primary campuses. But Collier officials said they want to “get it right” and are continuing to examine how to implement the program and how it fits into overall school security. Township Manager Sal Sirabella said a school resource officer is a “key element” to school safety, but is not the only aspect. “There have to be other improvements,” Sirabella said. “This is just one small part to make a school safe. The school board recognizes it. So does the police chief and township commissioners. It becomes a huge, continuous effort, and the school resource officer is one …

The SRO program has been in the works for over 2 years so this is not about rushing a plan. Fact is the commissioners need to sign the agreement and we need the community to stand as a solid front.   more ›

Collier Still Considering Putting Police Officers in Chartiers Valley Schools

A Collier Township official said there’s a “good chance” school resource officers could be working inside the Chartiers Valley middle/high and primary schools next year.

There’s a “good chance” school resource officers could be working inside the Chartiers Valley middle/high and primary schools next year. Collier Township commissioners and several Chartiers Valley School District officials met Wednesday to discuss implementing the program and the role the police officers would play while at the schools. Bob Schuler, president of the Collier Board of Commissioners, said they were concerned about making sure the township was ultimately in control of the police officers and that they weren’t just security guards. “It was a good meeting,” Schuler said. “A good discussion.” Chartiers Valley Superintendent Brian While Jr. and school directors Pam Poletti, Debbie Rice, Jamie Stevenson and Sandy Zeleznik met with …

Kids Serve Tea to Those Who Served

Students at the primary school held a special tea celebration to honor and recognize veterans.

More than two dozen little kids gave veterans big thanks on Friday afternoon at Chartiers Valley Primary School, where a commemorative assembly is held each year on Veterans’ Day. The assembly is called the Veterans’ Tea, and it’s a CVPS tradition as old as the school itself. Hosted by a partnership of first- and second-grade teachers, it has been an annual event since the 1996 launch of the CVPS building. The first Veterans’ Tea came about at the design of second-grade teachers Suzanne Schweikert and Sandy (Sheldon) Hallett, who were subsequently joined in their efforts by first-grade teacher Patricia Conley. Though Hallett retired three years ago, she still attends the yearly celebration, which Schweikert described as an event to honor …

Lice Outbreak Cancels Halloween School Events

Students were asked not to wear costumes to the primary and intermediate schools today.

The recent lice outbreak at Chartiers Valley Intermediate School has forced district officials to cancel the annual Halloween parade and request that students not wear costumes today. The decision also reaches to the primary school a few miles away, although there still will be a small Halloween parade in the front parking lot. In a letter sent home to parents, primary school principal Ronald Yasher said they are trying to make accommodations to prevent he spread of lice. District officials have said the lice outbreak at the intermediate school has been controlled and they want to prevent any additional cases. “This year we are asking that no costumes be worn for our Halloween party and parade,” Yasher wrote in the letter. “We want to …
