Ways to Go Greener in, Near Chartiers Valley

Here's a list of some places to take items that should not be sent to landfills or placed at the curb.

Although Earth Day is officially April 22, it's not too early for residents of Bridgeville and Heidelberg boroughs and Collier and Scott townships to begin to look at ways to be more environmentally friendly. The following is a list of items, provided in part by the Allegheny County Health Department, that should not be in landfills and generally aren't collected through municipal recycling. Listed below those items are places at which those items can be disposed/recycled. Banksville Road Construction Begins Monday

PennDOT is delaying the construction work on Banksville Road in Dormont until next week.

PennDOT is delaying the construction work on Banksville Road in Dormont until next week. The work was scheduled to begin Thursday morning and continue through Monday, but rain showers in the Pittsburgh area pushed construction back a few days. Construction is now expected to begin Monday and continue until Wednesday night. Crews plan to install crosswalk markings at various intersections and pave Helen Street at the intersection with Banksville Road. The northbound lanes of Banksville Road will be restricted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The southbound lanes will be under construction from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the three days of work. Construction Almost Completed on The Fresh Market in Mt. Lebanon

Construction crews are making big progress on The Fresh Market grocery store planed for Route 19 in Mt. Lebanon.

Construction crews are making big progress on The Fresh Market grocery store planed for the corner of Washington and Connor roads 19 in Mt. Lebanon. The building’s structure is up and crews are now working to finishing the exterior. Demolition crews razed the old Roth Carpet in January to make way for the new grocery store. The Fresh Market grocery store offers “an old-style butcher shop and fish market, bakery, produce and floral stands.” A company spokeswoman said a lease has been signed for the location, but an opening date still is unknown. Cochran Road Closures Set for Wednesday

Drivers traveling through Mt. Lebanon should expect delays.

Short-term lane closures on Cochran Road in Mt. Lebanon will occur on Wednesday, April 3, weather permitting, according to PennDOT. Restrictions will occur as needed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday between Beverly Road and Washington Road. Motorists are advised to use caution and expect possible delays. Bikram Yoga Center Coming to Mt. Lebanon

The Bikram Yoga, which has numerous hot yoga franchises around the country, will be the first one in the South Hills of Pittsburgh.

A Bikram Yoga is planned for Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon. The hot yoga center, which has numerous franchise locations around the country, will be the first one in the South Hills of Pittsburgh. Ignacio Filippini, who lives in Peters Township and plans to move to Mt. Lebanon, said he hopes to open his new business in June. After graduating from the Bikram Yoga College of India a few years ago, he’s worked full-time as a yoga instructor at 15 studios in the United States and Canada. He hopes to pass on what he’s learned to people of all fitness levels. “They taught me how to work with people of all different physical and mental abilities and how to optimize the Bikram practice for each individual’s specific needs,” Filippini said of his …

A.B. Hobby Shop Moving Out of Old Rollier's Barn

The A.B. Charles Hobby Shop in Mt. Lebanon will be closing this weekend in preparation to its move to Peters Township.

The A.B. Charles Hobby Shop in Mt. Lebanon will be closing this weekend in preparation to its move to Peters Township, according to the Observer-Reporter. The familiar barn store on McFarland Road, near the end of Banksville Road, will close at 6 p.m. Saturday. The owner Scott Charles, of Upper St. Clair, told the newspaper that Peters is now the "Cranberry of the South Hills" and expects store traffic to improve with the new location on Route 19, in a space where Century Sports once existed. A.B Charles has been in Mt. Lebanon since 2006. Before that, the shop was located on Route 19 in Dormont for 61 years.
