Obama Barely Wins CV Communities

The presidential election votes across the Chartiers Valley School District closely mirrored the national popular vote.

The presidential election votes across the Chartiers Valley School District communities closely mirrored the national popular vote. President Barack Obama won the overall combined votes in Bridgeville, Collier, Heidelberg and Scott Township by a slim 50.3%-to-49.6% margin over Gov. Mitt Romney. Obama pulled 50.4% of the national vote compared to Romney's 48%, according to unofficial results. That local total is down 1% from 2008 when he won the four communities by a combined 51.3%-to-48.7% against U.S. Sen. John McCain. The vote totals from 2008 and 2012, for the most part, mirrored each other. Obama drove up his biggest victory totals in Scott Township, although he lost Collier Township by the largest margin. Republican Keith Rothfus of Sewickley defeated incumbent Democrat Mark Critz of Johnstown by a margin of 52 to 48 percent to win election to the newly re-drawn Pennsylvania 12th congressional district.  Rothfus said his number one priority is the economy. "We got get the economy rolling again," he said after delivering a victory speech at the Holiday Inn on McKnight Road in Ross Township Tuesday night. "I'm concerned about tax policy, about the possibility of another tax increase on our small businesses on January first. The president said a couple of years ago; you don't want to raise taxes in a slow economy. And so we have to convince the president of the wisdom of his argument from a couple of years ago." Rothfus was asked about the …

Matt Smith Beats Raja for State Senate

Matt Smith defeated D. Raja for Pennsylvania State Senate with 53% of the vote.

Matt Smith bear hugged supporters and feverishly pumped hit arms in the air moments after learning he had won election to the Pennsylvania State Senate. The normally subdued 3-term state representative showed more emotion than usual after a hard-fought battle against fellow Mt. Lebanon resident D. Raja. Smith takes over the seat formerly held by John Pippy. The district wraps around the South Hills of Pittsburgh from Peters Township up to Findlay. “When you have a message that resonates, then that will trump money every day of the week,” Smith said about being outspent 3-to-1 on the airwaves. “The message we have is resonating with people.” Smith, standing with his wife, Eileen, and three young children, Delaney, Emerson and Jameson, …

State Rep. Nick Kotik Wins Re-Election

State Rep. Nick Kotik, D-Robinson, beat Republican challenger Aaron Kime to hold onto his 45th state House District seat.

More than a year ago, Nick Kotik thought his political career was over when Republicans redistricted and moved his state House district to eastern Pennsylvania. But the state Supreme Court threw out the maps and forced Republicans to redraw the district lines and giving Kotik new political life. On Tuesday night, the Democrat from Robinson Township won re-election to his sixth term by fending off his Republican challenger. "I never thought this is where I would be a year ago," Kotik said Tuesday night. Kotik easily beat challenger Aaron Kime with 67 percent of the vote in a rematch to the 2010 race for the 45th state House District. The district includes all of Bridgeville and Heidelberg, and portions of Collier and Scott Township. "I’m …

UPDATE: Mitt Romney Lands in Moon Township in Final Hours of Election Day

The Republican presidential candidate makes a final campaign stop in Moon before heading back to Boston to await results.

In one of his final appearances of the presidential campaign, Republican nominee Mitt Romney landed this afternoon in Moon Township, exiting a plane at the Atlantic Aviation hangar before leaving in a motorcade.  The stop was brief—Romney did not speak before stepping into an SUV motorcade of five vehicles. After walking out of his plane, he waved to a crowd of cheering supporters packed outside of the runway gate.  Romney campaign spokesman Bradley White said the GOP candidate would be traveling in the region this afternoon, but he said the schedule was kept private.  Romney's stay in the Pittsburgh area lasted just more than an hour—his plane left Pittsburgh International Airport just after 4 p.m. Romney stopped briefly at a Green Tree …

Update: Election 2012 Turnout Brisk in Allegheny County, Western PA

Allegheny County Common Pleas Court extends deadline for absentee ballots to be submitted from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. after elections officials receive more requests than expected.

Over and over, visitors to the Allegheny County Election Division heard the same refrain Tuesday morning: “Elections division, how may I help you?” "Elections division, please hold." From their headquarters Downtown, that constant jangle was the only way elections division workers could gauge that Tuesday was shaping up to be a busy Election Day around Allegheny County, Division Manager Mark Wolosik said. “You hear the phones ringing off the hook,” he said. The most-frequent questions? Most callers asked to confirm if they were registered to vote or where their polling places were located, he said. By mid-morning, division workers had fielded enough questions to prompt Wolosik to issue the office’s prediction: It would be a brisk voting …
