Heavy Rain Floods Chartiers Creek

Heavy rains Sunday afternoon brought flooding, submerging cars and nearly flooding structures.

Heavy rains Sunday afternoon brought high waters to several western Pennsylvania communities, submerging cars and nearly flooding structures. The Chartiers Creek began overflowing its banks around 5 p.m. Sunday and reached a few roads in the East Carnegie neighborhood that straddles Scott Township and Pittsburgh. The water apparently submerged several cars along Idlewood Avenue in the city, although no injuries were reported. East Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Walt Maust said that his station along Duncan Avenue was nearly flooded. But the water receded just as quickly as it came. “It came up pretty fast,” he said “but it went down just as fast.” Maust said he did not know of any structures being affected by the water, except for …

West Nile Virus Found in Bridgeville Area

Dozens of cases of the West Nile virus have been found in mosquitoes around western Pennsylvania over the past two months.

Dozens of cases of the West Nile virus have been found in mosquitoes around western Pennsylvania over the past two months, but no humans have been infected yet. Allegheny, Washington, Beaver and Fayette counties are currently considered “high risk” areas in Pennsylvania, according to state regulators. Three cases were pinpointed in the Bridgeville area in the past month–most recently on July 26 and July 21–and another case was found in a mosquito in Collier Township on June 21, according to state records. Other areas that have been impacted are the city of Pittsburgh with dozens of reports and nine cases in Wilkinsburg since July 3. Other areas that have had sporadic positive tests are Baldwin (July 26), Emsworth, Sewickley and Leetsdale (…

Some stories are cross-published across multiple sites if there is a regional vibe to it. It's one way to get people from different Patches to talk with each other about the issues. I sent this West Nile story to the Patches on the DEP's list so they could localize the headline and story.   more ›

Pittsburgh Area Still Enduring Drought

Even with a few raindrops over the weekend, our area is still under a drought watch.

The recent grey, overcast skies over western Pennsylvanians this weekend brought some rainfall. Yet, so far, we've still seen very few raindrops this summer. Because of those extremely dry conditions, all western Pennsylvania counties are under a drought watch according to the Palmer Drought Severity Index, which measures soil moisture conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor map issued last week shows western Pennsylvania as abnormally dry with the very western edge of the state now in moderate drought. This quickly evolving drought marks a sharp contrast to last summer.  Spring 2011 was the wettest on record for many states, including Ohio and Kentucky. Now, 61 percent of the U.S. is in moderate or greater drought. You may have noticed the …

Air Quality and Heat Advisories Issued for Area

Heat and humidity will be dangerous for young children, the elderly and anyone with respiratory problems.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued both a heat advisory and an air quality alert for western Pennsylvania this weekend. Temperatures are expected to soar well into the 90's with heat index values topping 100. The weather service says the combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will trigger heat related problems for the elderly, young children, and anyone susceptible to the heat. Experts suggest that you drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air conditioned room if possible, and limit your time outdoors.  For more tips and keeping cool, click here. Hot Weather Expected for Memorial Day Weekend

Temperatures will reach the high 80s and possibly the low 90s in the Pittsburgh region during the three-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The forecast for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend can be summed up with three words: Hot, hot and hot! Temperatures will reach the high 80s and possibly the low 90s in the Pittsburgh region during the three-day holiday weekend. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist with Bridgeville-based Air Science Consultants, said that warm weather could trigger a few afternoon or evening thunderstorms, although he expected most storms to stay north of Interstate 80 near Erie. He said lots of sunshine and a high-pressure system that will be sitting over the region through Monday brings the “ever-present threat” of showers. “But most of the time, it will be on the dry side and hot,” Sims said. He expected the highs Friday through Monday to hover between 88 and …

Protect Your Plants From The Freeze

Flowers and plants have started to bloom, but they could be damaged Monday night after the weather service issued a freeze warning.

A freeze warning will be in effect in Allegheny County—including the southern parts of the county—Monday night into Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service has indicated that freezing temperatures could occur from 10 p.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Tuesday. Temps most likely will be in the high 20s—the forecast is 28 in Bridgeville and Heidelberg—and unprotected outdoor plants could be damaged or killed. A hard freeze can occur in areas where temperatures are colder than 28 degrees for three or more hours. The mild weather over the last two weeks has caused trees and flowers to blossom, but it can be severely impacted by the hard freeze tonight. According to Gardening Know How, you can prevent plants from freezing by covering them with …

Wintry Mix Brings Snow to the Region

An inch or two could accumulate on grassy areas.

The biting rain that fell Wednesday morning turned into a wintry mix, although the amount of snow accumulation depended on which side of the city you’re located. Dan Krzywiecki, the chief meteorologist for Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, said the rain would gradually change over into a snowy mix before turning to all snow around Wednesday night's rush hour. However, with warmer than usual temperatures this week, he expected the only accumulation to be in grassy areas. “The ground temps are well above freezing, but as the air temperatures cool and approach freezing–that will be some time later this evening–there could be some slippery spots,” he said. “Plus any water on the roads after the event could turn to ice.” He expected …

Cookbook Combines History and Memories

Local author saw a draw to local cookbooks, mixed in his expertise and ran with the ideas.

Washington County native Douglas Robinson published a historical cookbook that hits home to Pittsburghers and southwestern Pennsylvanians. “I Grew Up in Southwestern Pennsylvania Cookbook” is a product of Robinson’s childhood, his book-sale travels, his book-publishing experience, and simply knowing it was “a good idea.” The cookbook features historical facts, vintage photographs, the region’s slang word definitions and more than 200 recipes, some of Robinson’s own and others of dear friends, family and local residents. “I (originally) was just going to sell this on the side,” he said. “But, people have really reacted well to it.” As an online bookseller on Amazon and Barnes & Noble, it wasn’t until a certain book sale that the cookbook …
