A snowstorm that blew through the Pittsburgh area Friday caused numerous car accidents and backed up traffic on major highways and local roads. The snow began falling in the Bridgeville area shortly after 9 a.m. and quickly covered most roads. Road conditions around the South Hills of Pittsburgh quickly deteriorated as snow blanketed western Pennsylvania. The National Weather Service recorded 4.2 inches of snow in the Bridgeville area. CV officials announced that all evening activities would be canceled Friday night. Also, the high school dismissed students a little bit earlier than usual to help the other school buses run on time. Police briefly shut down Hilltop Road in Collier Township near Nike Site after a car accident around 11:45 a.…

Troy Bogdan of Bridgeville says he caught the “acting bug” after a back injury sidelined him from working on his Crawford County organic farm last April. He played an extra in the new movie "Promised Land" that hits theaters Friday.
Troy Bogdan, an organic farmer living in Bridgeville, says he caught the “acting bug” after a back injury sidelined him from working on his Crawford County farm last year. An audition for a role as an extra last May has snowballed into a flurry of acting parts in several movies filming around western Pennsylvania, including the major production of “Promised Land,” which opened in theaters Friday morning. “I’ve been a fan of movies all my life, but I never thought I would be working for them,” Bogdan said. “It’s a hobby and we’ll see where it goes. I don’t have any expectations of being a movie star, but maybe it can lead to part-time income to supplement the farm income. I’ll do it as long as I’m still having fun.” The work started after …

A small snowstorm moving into the Pittsburgh area overnight could cause problems with the Tuesday morning rush hour commute. Western Pennsylvania is expected to receive between a half-inch to just under an inch of snow by the time most people are waking up to head to work. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, said light snow is expected to move into the area around 2 a.m. Tuesday and won’t end until just after the morning rush hour. “It should be just enough to make roads and bridge decks slippery,” Sims said of the Tuesday morning commute. “Just enough to be a pain in the butt.” He is anticipating less snow the farther north you go and more snow in the south and east. Sims said the Uniontown area could …

Allegheny County Common Pleas Court extends deadline for absentee ballots to be submitted from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. after elections officials receive more requests than expected.
Over and over, visitors to the Allegheny County Election Division heard the same refrain Tuesday morning: “Elections division, how may I help you?” "Elections division, please hold." From their headquarters Downtown, that constant jangle was the only way elections division workers could gauge that Tuesday was shaping up to be a busy Election Day around Allegheny County, Division Manager Mark Wolosik said. “You hear the phones ringing off the hook,” he said. The most-frequent questions? Most callers asked to confirm if they were registered to vote or where their polling places were located, he said. By mid-morning, division workers had fielded enough questions to prompt Wolosik to issue the office’s prediction: It would be a brisk voting …

The remnants of Hurricane Sandy whipped through western Pennsylvania and drenched the region, but left most area communities unscathed overnight. There were numerous reports of downed trees and powerlines, but the damage did not appear to be catastrophic or widespread. The Chartiers Valley School District canceled classes Tuesday due to the inclement weather. Meanwhile, most South Hills communities postponed their Halloween Trick-or-Treat until Saturday night. Duquesne Light reported about 650 customers were without power late Monday night, although most were in sporadic areas around Allegheny and Beaver counties. However, West Penn Power reported that more than 1,000 customers were without power in North Fayette and neighboring South …

Forecasters expect as much as 2-3 inches of rain over the next several days, and snow showers moving in by Tuesday night after Hurricane Sandy makes landfall on the East Coast.
While the U.S. East Coast prepares for what forecasters say could be a storm of "historic" proportions, emergency management officials are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best for the storm dubbed "Frankenstorm". A hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service early Saturday warns that prolonged rainfall is expected for the first half of the week. "That rain may be heavy at times on Monday night and Tuesday and runoff may cause flooding of small streams," the weather service website states. "The potential for river flooding will have to be monitored during the second half of the week." The National Weather Service also warns that windy conditions on Monday and Tuesday might cause minor damage and power outages…
