Where can I care for my pet in the Bridgeville, Collier, Scott, Heidelberg areas? Or should I adopt?
National Pet Day is Thursday, April 11, and what better time to care for your critter? Or perhaps this is the right time to adopt a new pet. According to petdayusa.com, the day was started by celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige in order "to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation." There are a few popular Pittsburgh-area shelters where you can adopt pets, including Animal Friends along Camp Horne Road in Ohio Township and the Animal Rescue League along Hamilton Avenue in Larimer. If adoption's not for you, the immediate Chartiers Valley area still offers many …

An Aldi’s low price grocery store is expected to open in South Fayette near the Bridgeville exit off Interstate 79.
An Aldi’s low price grocery store is expected to open in South Fayette near the Bridgeville exit off Interstate 79. The eight acres of land directly behind the former Exxon gas station is expected to be built into a shopping center called The Crossings at South Fayette with Aldi’s becoming the anchor tenant, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. A bank, restaurant, drive-thru coffee and other businesses also might move into the proposed shopping center, the newspaper reported. The Bridgeville Fuel Stop gas station next to McDonald’s would be demolished to build an entrance to the shopping center that connects to the Route 50 and Washington Pike intersection. Two other entrances would be built on Daniell Drive near the GetGo gas station. …

Boyce Road in South Fayette will be closed three days this week while construction crews replace a 60-year-old water pipeline. The busy road will be closed beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday and probably won’t reopen until Friday. Pennsylvania American Water, which is overseeing the work, announced the road will be closed between Lawn Shadow and Summit Ridge drives. There are posted detours in the areas around Mayview Road and Washington Pike to alert motorists of alternate routes. “This project will address a recent history of breaks and service interruptions caused by this aging main,” PAWC Operations Superintendent Greg Hlasnick said in a press release. “The investment will improve reliability and flows for firefighting.” The $70,000 project…

A portion of Boyce Road in South Fayette is scheduled to close on Feb. 27 for waterline construction.
A portion of Boyce Road in South Fayette is scheduled to close on Feb. 27. The closure is planned on Boyce Road near the 7-Eleven convenience store, according to the USC Public Works Crew. Boyce Road in Upper St. Clair will not be closed. Pennsylvania American Water announced this week the start of construction to replace more than five miles of aging water main in the Pittsburgh area. Clair Drive in Upper St. Clair will be affected. “Pennsylvania American Water is continuing to make investments that will improve pressure and fire flow for our Greater Pittsburgh customers,” said Jasun Stanton, Pennsylvania American Water manager of field operations for Pittsburgh. “By replacing aging water mains—that are in some cases more than 100 years …

We’re asking our readers what you want to see go into the former Cici's Pizza location in the Chartiers Valley Shopping Center after it closed months ago.
Cici’s Pizza at Chartiers Valley Shopping Center has been closed for months, so we’re asking our readers what you want to see go into the former restaurant’s location. The empty restaurant along highly-traveled Route 50 is just a few doors down from Dunham’s sporting goods store and the DMV. It would make a perfect spot for a new restaurant or shop. What does this area need that it doesn’t already have nearby? So, if you could see any business in this location, what would you like in the plaza? If not a restaurant, what else do you see here? Use your imagination and tell us in the comment section! Like the Chartiers Valley Patch Facebook page or sign up for our Daily E-mail Newsletter!

A driver suffered serious injuries late Monday night when he lost control of his pick-up truck on Route 50 and crashed into a utility pole across from Collier Town Square. Robert Cubic, 40, of Carnegie, was driving east on Washington Pike when he crashed into the pole, Collier police Chief Tom Devin said. Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said the man was coming home from his job in Kirwan Heights shortly before midnight when his truck “snapped around." “That was a vicious crash,” Lewis said. “The pole was inside the truck with him.” Cubic was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital for treatment. Lewis said he suffered facial lacerations, internal injuries and a broken leg, but the airbag likely saved his life. “He was conscious and …

A MedExpress is opening soon after construction crews ripped down the old Burger King in South Fayette.
Construction crews quickly erected a beautiful new tan and brown building in the spot where the Burger King along Washington Pike in South Fayette used to stand. Chartiers Valley Patch posted a story in July about the new business, but several readers have sent emails asking about what is going in the prime spot. It’s going to be a MedExpress Urgent Care Unit, and it’s going to open very soon. That announcement disappointed some readers and energized others who were glad that the new tax base would benefit South Fayette. Although the building looks nearly completed, it’s not known when the MedExpress will open its doors. South Fayette and company officials could not be reached for comment. Demolition crews quickly razed the old Burger King…

I am so tired of construction! I know this is when it HAS to be done, but could we please finish something before we start another? I live in Nevillewood and Prestly road being closed adds 15-20 minutes to my drive and if Route 50 is delayed, it will be longer. By the way...I almost NEVER see anyone working at the construction sight on Prestly. I heard there is a certain contractor that bid on …   more ›
