Paddle Without Pollution, a non-profit organization, cleans waterways throughout the state, and had great success in April cleaning Chartiers Creek.
It’s kind of unbelievable, the things that end up in the water, Melissa Rohm said. She’s certainly pulled enough garbage out of Pennsylvania’s creeks and rivers to know what people throw away, and where it can end up. And when she and her husband, David, both avid kayakers, got tired of picking litter out of the waterways they love, they founded the non-profit organization Paddle Without Pollution to make a difference. “In the summer of 2011, we launched our kayaks on the South Side downtown just for kicks, and thought we’d paddle to Heinz field and come back,” Melissa Rohm said. “We didn’t get very far when we started seeing just piles and piles of trash. When you’re down on the water, you get a really close-up view.” Rohm said she off-…

Meet Mumford! He's a Pit Bull-Terrier mix at the Animal Rescue League who needs a new home.
Mumford, a one-year-old Pit Bull-Terrier mix, came to the Animal Rescue League as a stray. ARL employees say he is timid and is getting used to the excitement of the kennel, as the new sights and sounds are a bit scary. According to ARL, Mumford does walk well on a leash and takes treats well. For more information about Mumford, call 412-661-6452 ext 215. Mumford's adoption fee is $115. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor-trailers worth of food, water and supplies to the areas hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy.
It's been said it's far better to have a neighbor who's near, than a brother who's far away, but in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Americans across the nation have proven to be the best neighbors and the strongest of families. This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles, VA, and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Swimming a woman to safety as deadly flood waters swirled on Washington Boulevard. Helping a neighbor escape from a fire. Pulling a fellow firefighter out after a floor collapses below him. Providing support for military families. Working to re-energize a school district. And dedicating more than 10 years to serving the American Red Cross in its mission to help others. Those words describe the efforts of the six recipients honored Thursday at the American Red Cross' fourth annual Heroes Breakfast, a fundraiser held in the Lexus Club at Consol Energy Center in downtown Pittsburgh. WPXI-TV sportscaster Bill Phillips served as emcee for the program. The recipients were nominated by event committee members and selected by an independent panel …

Bridgeville Public Library has received growing support and more volunteers in the few months since the community learned it was facing financial problems. Some people are offering money, others are volunteering their time to help out the library board and one South Fayette man even spent the day cutting the grass with a push mower. “People are willing to do almost anything to help us out,” said Joyce Heinrich, who was hired recently to spearhead fundraising efforts. “That’s what I’m finding while trying to organize all of this.” The library had to slash its staff and operating times in May because of budget and fundraising problems after the new building opened in early 2011. But Heinrich said people from Bridgeville and neighboring …

The Pittsburgh Red Cross will be holding a volunteer drive and orientation Thursday.
Due to a low number of volunteers this year in Allegheny County, the American Red Cross will be holding a volunteer drive Thursday at its Downtown location at 225 Blvd. of the Allies. “The local Red Cross is always prepared to respond any time disasters strike Allegheny County,” said Victor Roosen, Response Manager for the local Red Cross. “However, the Red Cross is in dire need of more volunteer responders to assist us in our effort to provide the victims of these disasters with their most essential needs.” Just last year the Red Cross of Western PA handled an average of 600 disasters throughout the 13 counties with 350 of those disasters occurring in Allegheny County alone. The two-hour orientation will include an overview of how …

The Bridgeville Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and officials hope to have a week-long celebration in October. Joyce Heinrich, who is the library’s new fundraising director, said she is planning a book series and quilt show to bring new people into the library and possibly spur donations. Heinrich also showed the board during its Tuesday night meeting an illustration of a sign the library will have installed on the front of the building to celebrate its anniversary in Bridgeville. The board agreed to pay $272 for the sign and installation. Heinrich noted that the library has not planned any special events for the anniversary, so she’s hoping the week-long celebration will help build fundraising momentum. She …

Heroes are all around us. They live and work right here in Western Pennsylvania. Ordinary people—like the ones right here in Bridgeville, Collier, Heidelberg and Scott—perform extraordinary deeds on a daily basis, however, these individuals often do not receive recognition for their noble deeds. However, the American Red Cross wants to applaud these courageous individuals by officially proclaiming them heroes at the fourth annual Red Cross Heroes Breakfast, to be held in Pittsburgh later this year. The Red Cross is asking community members to nominate heroes. Individuals who have performed a heroic act—such as saving lives during an emergency or supporting disaster preparedness in their communities—between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012 …

Michael Aquilina III, who grew up in Bridgeville, wrote a letter to the editor responding to claims that the library is struggling because of a lack of volunteers.

To the editor: I'm writing in regard to Bridgeville Public Library board member Nino Petrocelli's comment in Tuesday’s story on Chartiers Valley Patch (Bridgeville Library Facing Big Cutbacks) regarding the library's need to cut hours and layoff staff. While I greatly respect Mr. Petrocelli's contributions to the Bridgeville area over the years, his comment that "not one person" in Bridgeville has stepped up to help the library is false. The library does, in fact, have a dedicated group of volunteers who regularly donate time, effort and money to help the library with their operations and programming. These volunteers include several of my friends and family, and I'm shocked that Mr. Petrocelli would gloss over the existence of this …

A lack of volunteers and donations is forcing the Bridgeville Public Library to drastically cut back its hours beginning May 1. The library is cutting its hours by nearly half and now will be open only 35 hours a week, which is the minimum to still be able to accept state funding. The decision to reduce the hours is especially disappointing because the brand new $4 million library opened less than 16 months ago and a new entrance to the McMillen Street building was paved recently. Nino Petrocelli Sr., who is the borough council’s president and member of the library board, said volunteers and donations are the lifeblood for any library. But Bridgeville Public Library is having trouble getting interest from the community to offer help or …
