A pair of serious car accidents Saturday morning on Vanadium Road has one prominent emergency responder wondering if recent changes to the roadway fixed the problem. Crews responded to a three-car crash near the railroad tunnel around 8:30 a.m. that caused some of the motorists to be hospitalized. About an hour latter, a driver heading up Vanadium apparently lost control of his car when he hit the railroad tracks and crashed into a minivan going in the opposite direction. The driver of the car was taken to St. Clair Hospital. The woman driving the van had to be cut out of the vehicle and was taken to a Pittsburgh area hospital, Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said. Her son in the van, who is disabled, was taken to Children’s Hospital …

One person was taken to an area hospital in the Friday night crash in Scott Township. Collier Township police also responded to a Sunday morning crash in Kirwan Heights when a PAT bus collided with a car.
Emergency crews didn't have to travel far to respond to cars crashes within 36 hours of each other near Kirwan Heights. Firefighters responded to a single-car accident on Vanadium Road at Main Street in Scott Township around 11 p.m. Friday when a Jeep crashed and rolled over. The crash happened right next to the Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department, which responded with the assistance of East Carnegie and Glendale firefighters and Scott Township police. One person was injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital, Bower Hill firefighters said. That person’s name and condition were not released. The cause of that crash is under investigation. Less than 36 hours later, a Port Authority bus collided with a car near the former Kirwan …

The grinding down of the slick pavement of Vanadium and Montgomery roads near Kirwan Heights has substantially decreased the number of crashes in that area. Scott Township police Chief James Secreet said accidents on Vanadium near the train tunnel have “dropped 95 percent, at least” since the county’s public works department milled the surface in October. “Since they fixed that area, I can’t think of a major (accident),” Secreet said. “It fixed the problem (which) had something to do with the pavement.” More than 60 crashes happened in that area last year, Secreet said, because of what he thinks was slick asphalt laid down in late 2009 by the Allegheny County public works department. The grinding of the surface has roughed it up enough to …

Crews shut down South Gray Avenue in Kirwan Heights while trying to remove the tractor-trailer.
A trucker hauling kitchen countertops slid over a hillside in Collier Township after his GPS unit apparently malfunctioned Tuesday morning. The tractor-trailer couldn’t make the bend on South Gray Avenue while trying to get back onto Vanadium Road, prompting it to slide down an embankment and split a utility line. Collier police and Kirwan Heights firefighters were called to the scene shortly after 6 a.m. and South Gray Avenue was expected to be closed most of the day while crews repaired the damage electricity lines. “It doesn’t matter how wide you make the turn, you just can’t make it,” Lewis said. “The key now is to get him off the road and on with his delivery.” Lewis said the driver was heading to nearby Giffin Interior & Fixture to …

Call animal control if you know who owns this missing Corgi.
A sweet little female Corgi mix was found over the weekend on Vandium Road. The orange and white dog was found on Vanadium Road near the bridge that divides Scott and Collier Township. A motorist passing the nearby railroad crossing picked up the pup while passing by and delivered it to animal control. Roy Hayward, the Allegheny County animal control officer, said the dog has a microchip and that they are working to get information on the owner. Until then, anyone who may know who owns this dog should call Animal Control through the county dispatcher at 412-279-6911. Like our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter @CharValleyPatch

More than 60 crashes have been reported at Vanadium and Montgomery in the past year.
A troublesome Scott Township intersection that has been the site of dozens of crashes in the past year will be fixed soon. The sharp turn under the train tunnel at Vanadium Road and Montgomery Avenue near the United Industrial Park will be “roughed up” to prevent more car accidents, Scott police Chief Jim Secreet said. More than 60 crashes have happened there in the past year, Secreet said, because of what he thinks was slick asphalt laid down in late 2009 by the Allegheny County public works department. “I think it’s the roadway. Something with the material of the roadway,” Secreet said. “It doesn’t have to be icy. Just when the roads are a little wet, it can cause slippery conditions.” Secreet said there were no more than 10 crashes at …
