The $2.2 million Tri-Community Streetscape project that stretches from Heidelberg through Scott Township and into Carnegie is hitting the homestretch. The three municipalities are getting closer to making last-minute adjustments before approving the final plans to begin work. “Things are finally taking shape,” Heidelberg borough Manager Joe Kauer said. “We’re moving into final decisions.” The borough now has the most recent engineering designs of the project along Route 50 between Second and Fourth streets. The dazzling new streetscape planned for Heidelberg, Scott Township and Carnegie must now be scaled back because of expected rising costs. The three communities had $2.9 million to pay for the project, but estimates now put the streetscape renovations close to $4.5 million. Heidelberg Mayor Ken LaSota told the borough council about the higher costs associated with the project during its Tuesday night voting meeting. To come under budget, he said some changes will have to be made, which could include removing the linear rain garden, ornamental lighting and trees.
