Kirwan Heights Firefighters Offering Pet CPR Class

The Kirwan Heights Volunteer Fire Department is holding a CPR class for pet owners on Monday night.

The Kirwan Heights Volunteer Fire Department is holding a CPR class for pet owners. The class is Monday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. at the fire hall located at Washington Pike and Vanadium Road. There is no fee and anyone can attend. Those who want to attend the class are asked to RSVP by going to www.kirwanfire.com/rsvp. The class was great. Great people, great company, and live dogs, pets of the instructors, were demonstrators. It was really enjoyable considering the serious nature of the class. Police Will Train at CV Primary School

Don’t be alarmed if you see police cars outside Chartiers Valley Primary School on Monday. Numerous police departments plan to use the school for an ALERT training exercise on how to stop an active shooter in an emergency situation. The school is closed to students during the day due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. The drill is similar to training that police departments from across the area participated in at Chartiers Valley High School last January and at South Fayette High School last month. Seniors Learn How To Mentor New Residents at Retirement Home

Residents at Broadmore Senior Living in South Fayette are learning how to help others and work with administrators to make improvements.

Don Shepley said he was “scared to death” when he and his wife left their home to live at a personal care facility. “It’s frightening coming here,” Shepley said. “This is your new home and it’s scary.” That’s why Shepley, who now lives at Broadmore Senior Living in South Fayette, took a lengthy training class this year to learn how to mentor new residents and make improvements with administrators. Shepley graduated Friday with three other residents in the state’s new PEER program to become community leaders in their personal care home. “You gotta help them,” Shepley said of the new residents. “They don’t have all the answers and we don’t have all the answers, but we can work together to find them.” There are currently 1,400 graduates from …

Lifeguards Wanted at Settlers Park Pool

The lifeguard test for all county-run pools will be May 5 at North Allegheny High School.

The Allegheny County Parks Department currently is accepting lifeguard applications for the 2012 season at the Settlers Cabin Park Pool and other county-run pools. County lifeguards must be 16 years of age or older and must possess all necessary certifications prior to May 28, including lifeguard, first aid, and adult, child and infant CPR training. Lifeguard applicants are also required to pass an aquatics test that will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, at North Allegheny High School, 10375 Perry Highway in McCandless Township. Those taking the aquatics tests are reminded to bring a swimsuit and towel. Bower Hill Firefighters Train for Tough Conditions

Scott Township firefighters spent the weekend training to deal with different scenarios.

Even the bravest firefighters get a little claustrophobic in confined spaces. That’s why the Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department put together a weekend training session to help the firefighters improve on their training in smoky and confined spaces. “You get in there and its dark,” Bower Hill firefighter Jerry Butts said. “You have to get people used to moving around in the dark.” The fire department rented a Guardian training trailer from suburban Philadelphia to simulate the difficult situations in the event of a building collapse. The trailer has four tunnels filled with collapsed debris and simulated smoke that is typically pumped onto a theater stage.
