Small Snowstorm Headed for Pittsburgh

Meteorologists are tracking a small snowstorm coming into western Pennsylvania that will bring about an inch of snow to the South Hills by Wednesday morning.

Meteorologists are tracking a small snowstorm coming into western Pennsylvania that will bring about an inch of snow to the South Hills by Wednesday morning. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, expects a “wet snow” to move into the South Hills of Pittsburgh around 10 p.m. Tuesday before it changes over to sleet overnight. “It will for some slippery travel later tonight,” Sims said. Temperatures are expected to hover around 30 degrees overnight before the sleet changes over to rain Wednesday morning. Sims said they expect about an inch of accumulations, which could bring some slippery spots during the morning commute, but “no major problems.” The higher elevations of the Laurel Highlands in Fayette and …

Snowfall Causes Sled Shortage in South Hills

Stores in and around the South Hills can't keep up with the demand for sleds during this snowy weather.

Stores in and around the South Hills can't keep up with the demand for sleds. Dick's Sporting Goods at South Hills Village has no sleds left in stock. The same story over at Toys R Us. Both stores hoped to have truckloads of new supplies by this weekend, but it's unclear if there will be any new sleds for sale. The recent snowfall and cold temperatures have made for perfect sledding conditions for local kids. The Upper St. Clair 3-hole golf course has been packed with sledders recently. Do you know of a store with sleds still in stock? Or do you have a sled alternative to share with local kids? Please share in the comments below. Also, share the photos you took of your kids sledding this past week in the media box above. Click the "Upload …

Flurries Expected to Turn Into Moderate Snowfall

Light flurries Friday morning will turn into heavier snowfall with 2-to-4 inches expected by Saturday afternoon. Also watch out for slick spots during the Friday morning commute

Light flurries around dawn Friday are expected to turn into heavier snow later in the afternoon and evening. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, expects there to be “off-and-on light snow” during the morning in the South Hills of Pittsburgh before it gets heavier later in the day. That could bring 2-to-4 inches of snowfall in the area by Saturday afternoon. Some other forecasters are predicting 3-to-5 inches in the Pittsburgh area. “It’s just a matter of trying to time this thing and how it’s going to develop,” Sims said. Sims doesn’t expect more snowfall after that, but whatever is on the ground could remain until Christmas Day. That has Sims dubbing it a “Grey Christmas” this year. “It’s going to be a …

Hurricane Sandy Dominates News Coverage

It should come as no surprise that this week’s top news stories on Patch were about Hurricane Sandy.

It should come as no surprise that this week’s top news stories were dominated by Hurricane Sandy coverage. And while our friends along the East Coast took the brunt of the punishment, people in the Pittsburgh area were just as interested and concerned about how the unusual superstorm would affect us here. The top story of the week (and month, for that matter) was about most South Hills communities rescheduling Trick-or-Treating to Saturday. Only Carnegie kept it on the traditional Halloween night. Other top stories included forecasting when Sandy would hit the Pittsburgh area and the aftermath of it passing through western Pennsylvania. Two more stories included downed trees and powerlines that closed a Bridgeville road for hours and a …
