Light flurries around dawn Friday are expected to turn into heavier snow later in the afternoon and evening. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, expects there to be “off-and-on light snow” during the morning in the South Hills of Pittsburgh before it gets heavier later in the day. That could bring 2-to-4 inches of snowfall in the area by Saturday afternoon. Some other forecasters are predicting 3-to-5 inches in the Pittsburgh area. “It’s just a matter of trying to time this thing and how it’s going to develop,” Sims said. Sims doesn’t expect more snowfall after that, but whatever is on the ground could remain until Christmas Day. That has Sims dubbing it a “Grey Christmas” this year. “It’s going to be a …

A small snowstorm moving into the Pittsburgh area overnight could cause problems with the Tuesday morning rush hour commute. Western Pennsylvania is expected to receive between a half-inch to just under an inch of snow by the time most people are waking up to head to work. Dennis Sims, a meteorologist at Air Science Consultants in Bridgeville, said light snow is expected to move into the area around 2 a.m. Tuesday and won’t end until just after the morning rush hour. “It should be just enough to make roads and bridge decks slippery,” Sims said of the Tuesday morning commute. “Just enough to be a pain in the butt.” He is anticipating less snow the farther north you go and more snow in the south and east. Sims said the Uniontown area could …

Forecasters expect as much as 2-3 inches of rain over the next several days, and snow showers moving in by Tuesday night after Hurricane Sandy makes landfall on the East Coast.
While the U.S. East Coast prepares for what forecasters say could be a storm of "historic" proportions, emergency management officials are preparing for the worst and hoping for the best for the storm dubbed "Frankenstorm". A hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service early Saturday warns that prolonged rainfall is expected for the first half of the week. "That rain may be heavy at times on Monday night and Tuesday and runoff may cause flooding of small streams," the weather service website states. "The potential for river flooding will have to be monitored during the second half of the week." The National Weather Service also warns that windy conditions on Monday and Tuesday might cause minor damage and power outages…

A few inches of snow fell in the South Hills late Thursday night and more is expected over the weekend.
A flurry of snow showers pounded western Pennsylvania on Thursday night and it might get even uglier this weekend. The few inches of snow Thursday night is expected to turn into sleet Friday, and that will likely spur the National Weather Service to issue a warning. If you just shoveled your driveway or sidewalk, get ready to do it again. The area is supposed to get 1/4-inch of ice and 1 to 4 inches of snow total. Tonight's low is 24 degrees, with a high of 32 Saturday.
