Ryan Quinn hopes his "superb owl" commercial will be chosen by Doritos to air during the big game.
What began as a joke with one fan’s Super Bowl party invitation has turned into a television commercial that might be used by Doritos. Ryan Quinn, a 2006 Chartiers Valley graduate, wrote and directed a 30-second video that he hopes will be chosen by Doritos as a Super Bowl ad. It begins with the party’s host wondering why all of his guests are bringing owls to his apartment, only to realize he made an unfortunate typo on the invitations: Each guest was invited to a SUPERB OWL Party. *CLICK HERE TO WATCH THE COMMERCIAL* Quinn, who lives in Scott Township and runs a small film company, sent out similar invitations last year, but decided this year to turn it into a humorous commercial. Countless people have submitted videos, which Doritos …

Industry experts at Moon Township forum say property owners should ban together when considering leasing land to Marcellus Shale drilling companies.
Marian Schweighofer said it started for her on an evening four years ago, when a group of her fellow farmers in Wayne County gathered around a kitchen table. The group met to discuss the increasing number of offers each of them was fielding from natural gas drilling companies seeking to lease large tracts of Eastern Pennsylvania farmland to drill for Marcellus Shale gas. The neighbors collectively owned 10,000 acres of land. “We needed to find a way to pull our community together,” Schweighofer told a small audience of property owners Saturday at Robert Morris University. “We needed to be proactive now rather than reactive later. “Please realize that every part of the lease is negotiable,” she said. Schweighofer and a group of industry …

The handmade, stylish accessory that clips onto the side of your child's boot.
Peters Township neighbors and stay-at-home moms Katherine Reitz and Melissa Vautier were feeling crafty this fall. Both college-educated and into fashion, they talked about starting a business. In September, the pair launched BootieBitz over a cup of coffee in Vautier’s kitchen. So what is BootieBitz? A handmade, stylish accessory that clips onto the side of your child's boot. The company “helps kids of all ages to personalize their footwear and show off their own style and preferences,” according to its website. Reitz and Vautier said this time of year means one thing—the kids need new winter boots. Reitz has two children; Vautier has three. “We thought ‘What’s a trend that hasn’t been focused on?’” said Vautier. “UGG boots have been …

Healthy Pet Products had its grand opening in Upper St. Clair on Saturday.
Healthy Pet Products customers no longer have to travel to the North Hills to find natural food, supplements and treats for their dogs and cats. Owner Toni Shelaske opened a second store in Upper St. Clair. The store opened its doors at the end of October and held its grand opening on Saturday. Already the store is "doing very well," Shelaske said. "I'm passionate about what I feed pets," she said. "I have loyal customers because of my products and knowledge." Shelaske said her knowledge comes from her years of owning a pet-sitting business. She became aware of the common health afflictions in the pets she was taking care of and began researching. The root of the problem, in most cases, was what the animals were eating, she said. Since …
