Driver Hospitalized After DUI Arrest near Settlers Cabin Park

A woman being stopped for DUI had to be hospitalized after Collier police said she fought with officers and suffered medical problems by allegedly mixing alcohol and prescription pills.

A woman stopped under suspicion of DUI earlier this month had to be hospitalized after Collier police said she fought with officers and suffered medical problems after allegedly mixing alcohol and prescription pills. Police said a car driven by Melani Buck, 36, of Tarentum, was straddling the yellow line along Noblestown Road late on Dec. 6 and nearly hit a police cruiser. Officers said the driver got back into her lane and was driving fast before police stopped the car on Pinkerton Run Road near Settlers Cabin Park. That’s when police said Buck kicked two officers and a paramedic. She had to be restrained and an officer rode with her in an ambulance to St. Clair Hospital because she was “in bad shape medically” from the alcohol and pills…

Pittsburgh Botanic Garden Breaks Ground on New Entrance

The site near Settlers Cabin Park broke ground on the entrance that workers hope will help make the gardens a tourist attraction for the area.

The Pittsburgh Botanic Garden near Settlers Cabin Park broke ground on a grand new entrance that workers there hope will help make the gardens a tourist attraction for the area. The new entrance, which includes six acres donated from Allegheny County, will allow the botanical garden to build a barn and administration office. The 460-acre site has been a vision for 14 years, but was nearly wiped out by the devastating rainfall from the remnants of Hurricane Ivan in 2004. It washed away soil and made acid mine drainage a big problem in the area. “So many of the low-lying areas were damaged,” said Kitty Vagley, director of development for the botanical garden. “Our property was, too.” But the northern 60 acres weren’t damaged, so the focus …

Christmas Tree Recycling Locations

Settlers Cabin Park and South Park are recycling old Christmas trees in January.

You might still have a little bit of greenery in your home as the 12 days of Christmas wind down. But rather than throwing away the old Christmas tree, there are plenty of places around Allegheny County where the old fir can be recycled. In this area, residents can take their old Christmas trees to Settlers Cabin Park in Collier Township from Jan. 3 to 22. The park is accepting the trees each day at the swimming pool parking lot from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. There will also be drop-offs on the same dates and times at South Park’s swimming pool area. All lights, decorations and stands must be removed from the trees before they’re deposited at the park. The trees will be mulched and be used at Allegheny County parks. Click this link for more …

Grant Will Connect Settlers Cabin to Panhandle Trail

Collier hopes the connector will turn their new community park into a destination point.

A new connector will be built between Settlers Cabin Park and the Panhandle Trail thanks to a $500,000 grant from the state and county. Now, Collier Township officials hope the trail connector will help them turn their new community park at the former Nike Site into a destination point for area visitors. “It really enhances our linear park and it is a destination point for people to come to Collier,” township Manager Sal Sirabella said. “It’s a huge amenity for the people of Collier.” He said the township is planning to build a connector from the new Collier Community Park, which it acquired from the federal government just last week, to the Gregg Station stop on the Panhandle Trail. Now, the new grant will extend the connector from Gregg …
