Now, you can check the daily allergy forecast as easily as the weather forecast. The Pennsylvania Treasury's Bureau of Unclaimed Property lists local organizations and businesses with money due them—and there might be some out there for you, too.
Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives millions of dollars in unclaimed property, including abandoned bank accounts, forgotten stocks, uncashed checks, certificates of deposit, life insurance policies, safe deposit box contents and recovered stolen property. Most of this unclaimed property is owed to individual residents. (Read below to find out how to search for yourself or for a relative). However, there are a number of municipalities, school districts, fire and police departments, civic groups, and other organizations that also have money waiting for them. The work of more than 13,000 volunteers from neighborhoods, schools, businesses and organizations have made it possible for communities in 20 counties to enjoy 135 gardens.
While driving in the region, have you noticed the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's community gardens? These gardens, which are planted by volunteers each spring, including the ones in the Chartiers Valley area, have helped to beautify the region. According to the conservancy's website, corporate and organizational sponsorships and the work of more than 13,000 volunteers from neighborhoods, schools, businesses and other organizations have made it possible for communities in 20 counties to enjoy 135 gardens. Volunteers are needed to help with this spring's community flower garden planting. Here's a list of some places to take items that should not be sent to landfills or placed at the curb.
Although Earth Day is officially April 22, it's not too early for residents of Bridgeville and Heidelberg boroughs and Collier and Scott townships to begin to look at ways to be more environmentally friendly. The following is a list of items, provided in part by the Allegheny County Health Department, that should not be in landfills and generally aren't collected through municipal recycling. Listed below those items are places at which those items can be disposed/recycled.
