Library Air Conditioning Still Not Fixed

Workers and patrons at Scott Township Public Library will have to wait a little longer for air conditioning.

Workers and patrons at Scott Township Public Library will have to wait a little longer for air conditioning. The township this week hired a company to fix the air conditioning unit for $3,600 and that work likely will be completed by next week after the parts are ordered. The air conditioning unit on the library’s roof stopped working last month, causing the room to be uncomfortably hot during the warmest time of the year. The township commissioners decided at their meeting last month to either replace the unit or fix it depending on the cost. Commissioner David Jason said it was “terrible” that the library workers and visitors have to endure those conditions in August and September. Commissioners Bill Wells said during their Tuesday night…

Heated Meeting Ruffles Some Feathers

Scott Township officials and library workers clash over use of a meeting room for children's events.

A couple feathers apparently left behind by a Scott Library children’s craft event is ruffling the feathers of some township commissioners. That led to some commissioners questioning whether the library should still be allowed to use the meeting room chambers for its children’s events, or if it should move the events to others areas that would accommodate less people. About a dozen people spoke during Tuesday night’s Scott Township Board of Commissioners meeting, saying the loss of the meeting room space would be a major blow to the library. “We have a great asset and people love it and appreciate it,” librarian Janet Forton said. Kathleen Haak, who serves as president of Friends of the Library, said many other libraries are envious about …

This is just craziness. My family has been attending children's programs in the commissioners' meeting room for nearly 10 years now. Miss Sherry and her crew of volunteers ALWAYS clean up after programs. I really don't understand why any of the commissioners object to the library's use of the room. To say that no crafts or food can be in the room is absurd. How can you have engaging, educational …   more ›

Lack of Space Could Cut Library Events

Scott Library workers are concerned about where they’ll be able to hold their children's programs.

Scott Township Public Library is scrambling to find a new place to hold its children programs after workers were told they no longer can use the commissioners’ meeting room. They’ve been told they now can instead use a 20-by-14 room, which is about one-third the size of the meeting room, that was previously used to store tax records. If they can’t find a larger room, library workers say they’ll have to eliminate programs for lack of space. Janet Forton, the library’s director, sent out an e-mail Monday afternoon urging people in the community to show up for Tuesday night’s commissioners voting meeting and speak on behalf of the library. There is currently an item on the agenda to approve building renovations for the library. “If a bigger …

Scott Library Hosts Annual Book Sale

The annual book sale runs through the weekend at the Scott Park Community Room.

This summer, you may have taken a good book to the pool. This fall, you can take a good book home from the pool. The Scott Township Friends of the Library are currently hosting their annual book sale in the Community Room (just above the now empty swimming pool). Avid readers lined up for the start of the sale Thursday when the doors opened up at noon. There are all sorts of books on sale at the annual event, from large print, children and young adult to health books and cookbooks. On Wednesday night, the Friends of the Library had a private sale event, open to members, giving them a chance to make the first selections. Annette McGanka is the chairperson of the used book sale. She has been a member of the Scott Township Friends of the …

It's Official: Summer is Here!

It's the longest day of the year, but you wouldn't know it with all these clouds.

Whether it’s the beach or a porch-view vacation, everyone is ducking out of work early to spend a little more time in the sun. It’s Pittsburgh. We have to take what we can get. The summer solstice reminds us, “If you haven’t started celebrating summer yet … get cracking!” The summer solstice is a Latin word which breaks down to sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). When the sun hits its southernmost extreme it appears to be standing still.  It’s all about the sun's path (or rather Earth’s rotational path around the sun). This year, it will happen precisely on June 21 at 17:16 (5:16 p.m.). It’s winter solstice in Australia, but on December 21 it will all be flipped and they will have summer while we have winter.  It’s recognized worldwide…
