Dick's Sporting Goods, which is based in Moon Township, announced it has suspended sales of semi-automatic rifles from all stores in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, CT.
Two major retailers are pulling the plug on sales of certain semi-automatic weapons nationwide in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary. Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of some semi-automatic rifles from all stores. The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT. In a statement, the store said it ordered the move out of respect for the victims and families of Newtown. The school district is working with police to place “school resource officers” inside the three campuses.
Chartiers Valley School District officials first thing Monday morning met with the police chiefs in Collier and Scott to review school security and how it can be improved. Superintendent Brian White Jr. spent the morning with Collier police Chief Tom Devin and Scott police Chief Jim Secreet and they discussed the possibility of adding a police officer to the district’s three school campuses. In a letter to parents Monday, White said they made the formal request to both police departments to have a “school resource officers” at the middle/high school, primary school and intermediate school. “The school district is making preparations to substantially fund this effort from our existing budget,” White wrote in the letter. Local and state police in Newtown, Conn. were called to an elementary school at about 9:30 a.m. Friday after a gunman opened fire at the school, killing more than two dozen people.
Connecticut police said Friday afternoon that 26 people, including 20 children, were killed at an elementary school after a gunman opened fire. Another adult was killed at a second location. The Scene Police in Newtown, CT were called to the Sandy Hook School at about 9:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call. They alerted Connecticut State Police and authorities began an active shooter investigation once they arrived at the school, according to Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance. Authorities said the gunman was found dead inside the school. He was allegedly armed with four guns and a high-powered assault rifle.
