A suspected drunk driver led police on a high-speed chase along Route 50 through Heidelberg, Scott and Collier before crashing into another car. Read about that and more crime in the weekly Heidelberg police blotter.
A suspected drunk driver led police on a high-speed chase through several communities along Route 50 before crashing into another car earlier this month. Heidelberg police said they tried to stop John Perella, 29, of Collier, for suspended registration when he allegedly drove away from them around 4 p.m. on Nov. 1. Police officers from Heidelberg, Collier, Scott and Bridgeville joined the chase and witnessed him crash into another car before careening into a yard near the 1100 block of Washington Pike in Kirwan Heights. Perella ran from the car, but was stopped by officers shortly after. He was taken to St. Clair Hospital before being transported to Allegheny County Jail. Perella faces charges of drunken driving, reckless endangerment, …

About 40 people worked to plan numerous trees provided by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy’s TreeVitalize programs offered to many local communities. The project is part of Heidelberg’s plans to improve the streetscape on and around Route 50. “We thank everyone for their hard work,” borough Manager Joe Kauer said in a press release. “This project really turned out amazing, and it will leave a long-lasting positive impact on our community!” Do you have photos of Saturday’s TreeVitalize event? A couple of crashes on Washington Pike in Kirwan Heights during the peak of rush hour have snarled the evening commute for motorists this week. A truck rolled over on Sept. 17 when a car plowed into while trying to exit the John Deklewa & Sons Inc. business, Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said. No one was seriously injured and crews rolled the truck back over onto its wheels. The driver then apparently was able to drive it away with only minor damage, Lewis said. Less than 48 hours later, two cars crashed at the same location, Lewis said. One car pulling out of Deklewa was clipped by another car shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday. Lewis said both drivers suffered minor injuries and were taken to St. Clair Hospital for treatment. Lewis …

One person was taken to an area hospital in the Friday night crash in Scott Township. Collier Township police also responded to a Sunday morning crash in Kirwan Heights when a PAT bus collided with a car.
Emergency crews didn't have to travel far to respond to cars crashes within 36 hours of each other near Kirwan Heights. Firefighters responded to a single-car accident on Vanadium Road at Main Street in Scott Township around 11 p.m. Friday when a Jeep crashed and rolled over. The crash happened right next to the Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department, which responded with the assistance of East Carnegie and Glendale firefighters and Scott Township police. One person was injured in the crash and taken to an area hospital, Bower Hill firefighters said. That person’s name and condition were not released. The cause of that crash is under investigation. Bridgeville’s streetscape construction project is expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Bridgeville’s summer-long streetscape project is winding down and expected to be completed by the end of the month. That should come as welcome news for business owners who have been working around construction crews and motorists who have been stuck in traffic from the lack of turn lanes on Washington Avenue. All lanes should be reopened in a couple of weeks and the borough is now ordering bushes and other plants where the trees used to stand. Borough Manager Lori Collins said they will plant shamrock hollies, big blue lily turf and black eye susans. “We can’t put trees in because the planting beds are too shallow,” Collins said. “We’d end up with issues like we had before. “We’re happy about get everything in. Maybe next year, some of …

Construction crews broke a 10-inch natural gas transmission line on Route 50 in Kirwan Heights.
Construction crews working to move a guardrail on Route 50 in Kirwan Heights accidentally broke a 10-inch natural gas transmission line, forcing emergency responders to shut down the busy road for nearly 20 hours Saturday. The construction company, identified by Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis as Green Acres, broke the line around 1 a.m. Saturday, causing natural gas to spew from the pipe across Route 50 from John Deklewa & Sons Inc. “You wouldn’t believe it,” Lewis said. “It was like a rocket engine the way it was shooting out there.” He said the transmission line is a main artery that delivers natural gas to the region. Lewis said gas crews initially attempted to shut off service to the entire area, but there were concerns from the …

PennDOT recently renamed the Kirwan Heights interchange of Interstate 79 to “Collier Exit” and not everyone is happy about the change.
PennDOT recently renamed the Heidelberg/Kirwan Heights interchange of Interstate 79 to “Heidelberg/Collier Exit” and not everyone is happy about the change. Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis blasted the decision saying it could cause confusion during emergency calls near Exit 55 of I-79, while also erasing the village along Route 50 from the interstate map. “They’re taking away the history of this community and all the small communities around this area,” said Lewis, who also lives in the Kirwan Heights neighborhood of Collier Township. “With a rivet gun, they just wiped Kirwan Heights off the map.” PennDOT made alterations to the interstate exit signs this week after Collier Township officials asked in January for the changes. Township…

Retailers say they don’t mind the orange cones and wooden planks that surround their storefronts because the work will improve Bridgeville's business district.
Bridgeville’s streetscape project has torn up the sidewalks and caused lengthy traffic back-ups, but that seems to be just a small price to pay for improving the town’s main business district. Retailers say they don’t mind the orange cones and wooden planks that surround their storefronts, and it apparently hasn’t hurt business as construction crews begin the second phase of the sidewalk renovations. Tracy Artman, who owns Tracy’s Treats on the main drag near Station Street, said she didn’t mind the nuisance from construction because it’s improving the town’s appearance, which she hopes will attract new customers and businesses. “It did impact business a little, but I’m so grateful they did it,” Artman said. “It looks great. I love the …
