A few scrooges are stealing money from donation boxes at a couple of Scott Township churches. Scott police received reports of thefts from the donation boxes at both Our Lady of Victory Maronite Catholic Church and Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic Church on Nov. 27. There wasn’t a lot of money in either donation box–only about $50 to $60–but the thefts are upsetting to those who worship at the churches. The Rev. Jay Donahue of Sts. Simon and Jude told WPXI-TV that the box was ripped off from a bolted candle memorial area inside the unlocked church. A Pittsburgh area man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from two people who operate ATM businesses in this area has been sentenced to jail time after pleading guilty. John Robert Sullivan pleaded guilty to two counts each of theft by deception and theft by unlawful taking after state police said he stole $415,000 from the two businessmen, who live in Scott Township and Bridgeville. Sullivan was sentenced to 11 ½ to 23 months in prison and ordered to pay $350,240 in restitution last week, according to the Allegheny County district attorney’s office. From January 2009 through June 2010, Sullivan duped the two men into lending him hundreds of thousands over numerous locations to install ATM machines across the region that in some cases…

A quick-change scam artist hit the Giant Eagle in Chartiers Valley Shopping Center last week. Collier police said a black man walked into the grocery store at around 4:30 p.m. on Sept. 12 and went to the customer service desk to make a transaction. The man was able to scam the clerk out of $150, police said. A quick-change thief also hit the Dunkin’ Donuts in Dormont on Sept. 7. Police did not say if the two crimes are related. A pair of scammers ripped off a Collier Township homeowner last week. Collier police said a man and woman went to a Cloverleaf Drive home to work on the roof on Aug. 22 and then split up while inside. Police said the woman went to a bathroom while the man went onto the roof to look at a repair. The homeowner later reported $170 from his bedroom. Police said the pair left the home in a silver Mercedes-Benz sport-utility vehicle with Florida plates. A robber confronted an employee at the H20 bar along Noblestown Road after closing time and stole her tip money, Scott Township police said. The tip money was stolen from her while she was in the parking lot after the closed for the night in the early hours of Aug. 16, police said. Investigators did not elaborate on how the money was stolen. A description of the robber was not available. A Bridgeville area man is heading to trial on multiple burglary and theft charges. Read more in the weekly district court round-up.
Multiple burglary and theft charges against a Bridgeville area man were waived to court before his preliminary court hearing with District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet. South Fayette police arrested 31-year-old Christian Paul on June 3 and charged him with numerous counts of burglary, receiving stolen property and theft. Police said he committed his crimes on May 7, according to court records. He waived all the charges to court on June 11. He is being held in Allegheny County Jail on $15,000 bond. His formal arraignment is scheduled for July 26 at the Allegheny County Courthouse.
