PennDOT is changing its Prestley Road bridge construction closure point to allow additional access to nearby businesses, churches and homes. Local traffic coming from Route 50 in Bridgeville will now be allowed to travel through the concrete barrier that is stationed at Journey Church and Cavanaugh Landscaping. However, thru-traffic will not be permitted to continue through toward Thoms Run Road. Construction on the Prestley Road bridge began March 11 and allows truck and local traffic through using a temporary signal. The bridge project will be done this fall and includes replacing the deck and bearings, structural painting and roadway improvements. A Cecil Township man is being charged with DUI and other crimes after he crashed into a tanker truck Friday afternoon, causing lengthy delays on Bower Hill Road in Bridgeville.
A Cecil Township man is being charged with DUI and other crimes after he crashed into a tanker truck Friday afternoon, causing lengthy delays in Bridgeville. Devin D. Carter, 38, was arrested minutes after the crash along Bower Hill Road on Feb. 8 after Bridgeville police officers said they spotted him walking away from the scene. Investigators said they believe Carter was under the influence of drugs when he crossed the centerline and crashed into the side of the tanker. The truck’s fuel tank ruptured, spilling diesel onto the roadway, although the used motor oil it was transporting did not leak, police said. Police said Carter failed a field sobriety test and claimed to be “still recovering from a hangover from the Super Bowl” even …

A tanker that spilled oil at the end Bower Hill Road in Bridgeville closed the roadway for nearly two hours and caused a traffic nightmare right before the evening rush hour.
A tanker that spilled oil at the end Bower Hill Road in Bridgeville closed the roadway for nearly two hours and caused a traffic nightmare right before the evening rush hour. Authorities were dispatched to the oil spill around 2:25 p.m. Friday between McLaughin Run Road and Union Street. Initial reports indicated a crash in the area caused the oil to leak for the tanker. Police immediately diverted traffic onto parallel running Baldwin Street and firefighters began spreading material on the road to soak up the oil. A long line of cars could be seen on Baldwin and nearby Railroad Street as motorists snaked around the detour. A hazardous material crew has been called to the scene to assist in the clean up. Firefighters were seen brooming up …

Greentree Road will remain open this weekend near Old Washington Pike as construction crews put the finishing touches on roadway rehabilitation project. There will only be minor lane restrictions from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday as crews work on the shoulder of the roadway near Ducky’s Car Wash. Crews are expected to finish the job next weekend. The area had been closed to all traffic the past two weekends so workers could repave the roadway with concrete. Greentree Road near Old Washington Pike will close again this weekend as construction crews rebuild the roadway with a new concrete surface. PennDOT said construction work will occur between the Greentree Road bridge over Chartiers Creek and the railroad crossing next to Ducky’s Car Wash. Crews will close the roadway from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 a.m. Monday. Work will continue for the next three weekends after construction began on Oct. 19. PennDOT said the work will include concrete reconstruction in the area. The construction is expected to cause major congestion in and around the area because Washington Pike’s connection point to Greentree Road will be effectively cut off. There will be signs posted notifying motorists of detours. The …

A ruptured water pipeline on Carothers Avenue in Scott Township broke windows and flooded two homes Tuesday night. The major pipeline between Magazine Street and the Glendale Bridge happened around 5:15 p.m. and caused major traffic delays and loss of water service to nearby homes. Rocks and gravel from the rupture went through one window and the water sprayed toward two homes. It eventually flooded the lower levels of the homes with about four inches of water. A video posted onto Chartiers Valley Patch by a reader showed the water rocketing out beneath the pavement and at two houses across the street. Glendale firefighters, whose station is just a few hundred feet from the break, were immediately on scene with vehicles to detour traffic …

A leaking tanker truck on Noblestown Road near Carnegie forced nearby residents and workers to evacuate the area for nearly seven hours Wednesday. Collier police stopped the tanker truck, which was leaking an unknown fuel, around 11 a.m. Wednesday as it was heading into Carnegie near the Interstate 79 exit, Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said. The chemical was removed from the tanker and the road was reopened around 5:45 p.m. The problem forced the evacuation of nearby homes in Collier’s Cubbage Hill neighborhood and PennDOT closed the Carnegie exit of I-79. Lewis said the industrial park across from the roadway, which is in Scott Township, was also evacuated. Hazardous material crews were at the scene to transfer what was left of …

The second phase of Bridgeville’s streetscape project is beginning Tuesday night, meaning half of the work to rebuild the sidewalks is done. Unfortunately, it also means another six weeks of construction on the other side of the sidewalks in the heavily-traveled business district along Washington Avenue. Route 50 in Bridgeville will be closed in both directions from 9 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday while construction crews remove painted lines and install temporary markings along the roadway. That will allow construction crews to work their way along the roadway replacing the bulging and uneven sidewalks. The $380,000 streetscape project began on April 25 and forced some lane closures so crews could work safely. The entire project, …

Crews are relocating a waterline in an area of the hillside that collapsed months ago.
A major road connecting Collier Township to South Fayette closed Monday morning and will not reopen for months. Presto-Sygan Road will be closed while crews from Pennsylvania American Water relocate a waterline in an area of the hillside that collapsed months ago. The roadway will be shut down between Millers Run and Oakridge roads. There were single-lane restrictions in that area because a large chunk of the northbound lane had collapsed and fallen down the hillside. PennDOT had stationed stop signs in the area to allow traffic to pass the one-lane road. To get around the road closure, PennDOT is suggesting that motorists continue on Millers Run Road before turning right onto Battle Ridge Road. Drivers can then follow that to Oakridge …
