Spencer Stefko has resigned from his position as the Chartiers Valley Lady Colts basketball coach, according to The Almanac. Stefko submitted his resignation to Chartiers Valley’s athletic director Frank Vulcano Jr. on Friday stating he thought a new person was needed to coach the girls’ basketball team, according to The Almanac. The decision is puzzling because it comes on the heels of a season in which the Lady Colts advanced to the WPIAL championship game for the first time in school history. The girls lost to Bethel Park in the championship game. Local Catholic leaders were surprised by the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI on Monday morning, but also called it a “powerful move” of strength by the pope for the church. Sister Barbara Anne Quinn, principal of Holy Child Catholic School in Bridgeville, said she thinks the decision had to be a difficult one, but was in the best interest of the church. “To me, I was surprised given the fact that it hasn’t happened in 600 years,” she said. “I think it shows a very spiritual person who recognizes what was needed and doing what (he thinks is best).” The fact that is hasn’t happened since the 15th century is mind-boggling, she said, although it shows the church is not “stuck in a mold.” “It was a very powerful move and shows that the church …

Bridgeville's library board President Nino Petrocelli Sr. will resign from his seat at the end of September. The long-time board member told Chartiers Valley Patch during a phone interview Thursday that he’s proud of the new library and the many amenities it offers the community and residents. He announced his retirement from the board at its monthly meeting Tuesday night. Petrocelli was instrumental in construction of the new library, although it has dealt with difficult financial problems ever since it opened in January 2011. “I see so many good programs,” Petrocelli said. “So many kids and adults enjoy our programs.
