Boy Hit By Car in Rennerdale

An 8-year-old boy suffered an apparent leg injury when he was struck by a car while trying to cross a busy road in Rennerdale last week. Collier Township police said they don't expect to charge the teenage driver.

An 8-year-old boy suffered an apparent leg injury when he was struck by a car while trying to cross a busy road in Rennerdale last week. Collier Township police were called to Noblestown Road at Sunnyside Avenue around 7 p.m. on April 4 for the accident. The boy, whose identity and condition were not released, was apparently taken to Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh. Collier police Chief Thomas Devin said the boy was walking with his grandmother when he “got away from her” and began crossing the road. He apparently looked for cars, but the vehicle likely was obscured because it was beyond the crest of the road. Devin said investigators do not expect to file charges against the teenage driver. Devin said they do not think she was speeding …

VIDEO: Pond Hockey in Rennerdale

You have to watch this awesome YouTube video of a pond hockey game right next to the Rennerdale Volunteer Fire Department in Collier Township. There is some salty language at the beginning, but it’s a lot of fun to watch.

You have to watch this awesome video of a pond hockey game right next to the Rennerdale Volunteer Fire Department in Collier Township. A group of players took to the ice over the weekend during the recent snowstorm and frigid temperatures. The pond is next to the fire department in the Collier Township village of Renneradale. There is some salty language in the first few seconds of this raw YouTube video, but it’s a lot of fun to watch. The video was shot from a “GoPro” camera strapped to one of the player’s helmets before they stick the camera in the goal.

Noblestown Road in Collier Township is closed after a tractor-trailer trying to make a sharp turn near Rennerdale crashed and became lodged on a guardrail. Collier police said the driver apparently was lost and tried to make the “horseshoe bend” curve just past Nike Site Road. Officers and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene at 5:43 a.m. Thursday. It’s not known how long Noblestown between Nike Site and Baldwin roads will be closed. An orange “Road Closed Ahead” sign is blocking motorists from entering the area. Police said they’re waiting for a large tow truck to come to the scene to remove the tractor-trailer from the guardrail. The driver was not injured in the crash. The tractor-trailer was gone by the time the school buses came back in the afternoon and I drove through there around 5 PM and it was cleaned up but guiderails were missing. They will replace those AGAIN! That usually takes the better part of half a day and reduces traffic to one lane through there. Something really does need to be done as this happens far too often.   more ›

Origin of Flag Day Rooted in Rennerdale

Collier Township, considered the Home of Flag Day, will hold it's annual ceremony Sunday at 1 p.m.

The symbolism behind Flag Day goes beyond typical patriotism for people living in Collier Township. That’s because many consider Rennerdale the “Home of Flag Day” after prominent resident William T. Kerr lobbied for it to become a national holiday. Kerr lived in the township from 1911 to 1928, all while overseeing the Flag Day Association of western Pennsylvania. The self-proclaimed "Father of Flag Day" started the group in 1888 and worked as the association’s president for 50 years. What began as “Flag Week” in the early 1900s  soon became something more when President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed in 1916 that Flag Day would be celebrated on June 14. But it was years later when President Harry Truman officially made it a national holiday in …

Police Warn of Thefts in Rennerdale

About a dozen car and shed break-ins have been reported in the Rennerdale area this week.

Collier Township police are warning residents to lock their homes, cars and sheds after a string of thefts in the Rennerdale area. Police Chief Thomas Devin said there were about a dozen thefts from sheds and unlocked cars – most occurred Jan. 1 and 2 – over the past week. He said it’s a “crime of opportunity” when people leave valuables in their unlocked vehicles. “Unfortunately, people feel they’re in a safe area and don’t need to lock their doors or cars up,” he said. “It gets to be a prime area for anyone to get into. Don’t leave valuables out. Don’t leave anything in there that you don’t want to lose.” Investigators were able to find foot tracks because of the snowfall those days, but they’re still trying to locate a suspect. Police …
