Live Traffic Map of Route 50 Corridor

We’ve put together a “live traffic map” that shows you how Route 50 and other roads around the South Hills are moving as people make a final rush on Christmas shopping.

There are only a few more shopping days left before Christmas and the strip malls and stores that dot Route 50 from Bridgeville to Heidelberg are expected to be packed. That means Washington Pike likely will be bumper-to-bumper traffic as people try to get out of Chartiers Valley Shopping Center, Great Southern, Collier Town Square or Raceway Plaza. We’ve put together a “live traffic map” that shows you how Route 50 and other roads around Pittsburgh are flowing. You can click on the map and move it around to see other parts of the South Hills. Two Expected to be Charged in Purse Snatching Ring

Two men are accused of stealing a woman's purse while she stood inside Walmart waiting for heavy rains to stop. Police think the men have stolen other purses in Carnegie and North Fayette.

A woman standing inside Walmart waiting for a heavy rainstorm to pass had her purse snatched from her shopping car earlier this month. Scott police said a man ran past the woman and nabbed the purse shortly before 10 p.m. Aug. 9. The purse contained credit cards, which police said were later used to make illegal purchases elsewhere. Scott police Chief Jim Secreet said investigators reviewed surveillance video of the incident and have two suspects in the theft. However, he did not name them because they have not been arrested, although he expected charges to be filed against the two men early next week. Secreet said the pair is also being investigated for similar thefts at the Carnegie Bingo and Walmart in North Fayette. He said authorities…

Elderly Drivers Crash Into Two Scott Businesses

Two elderly drivers crashed into separate Scott Township businesses within 45 hours of each other.

Two elderly drivers crashed into separate Scott Township businesses within 45 hours of each other, although no one was seriously injured in either accident. A woman accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brake around 8 a.m. Thursday, causing her car to careen into the Tomatoes pizza shop next door to the Gab & Eat diner, Glendale fire Chief Tom Salerno said. The unidentified woman and her husband, who was a passenger in the car, were evaluated at the scene, but not seriously injured. No one was inside the pizza shop, which has been open only part-time in recent weeks. Tire marks could be seen on the tile floor and the cashier’s table was nearly broken in half. It’s not known how much it will cost to fix the damage. “The whole car, …

Heidelberg Raceway Reignites Memories

Racing enthusiasts gathered Sunday for the unveiling of the Heidelberg Raceway historical marker. Do you have memories of the racetrack? Share them with us in the comments section!

Jim “Fireball” Sarasnick raced cars at Heidelberg Raceway for most of the 1960s while living in Bridgeville. So he was saddened and very disappointed when the legendary local speedway closed and turned into a strip mall. But he was happy to return from his current home in Tucson, AZ, to pay homage to the legendary speedway that was officially named to Pennsylvania’s list of historical places on Sunday. “It was a bad dream,” Fireball Sarasnick said of when the track closed. “It would’ve been nice to keep it a racetrack. It was a lot of fun, exciting. This probably would’ve been a NASCAR track if it had stayed around.” Instead, Heidelberg Speedway closed in 1973. But not before the track, which straddles the municipal border between Scott …

Heidelberg Raceway's Marker To Be Unveiled

History buffs and car enthusiasts will have plenty to do Sunday afternoon when a historical marker is unveiled at Heidelberg Raceway to honor its rich legacy.

History buffs and car enthusiasts will have plenty to do this weekend when a historical marker is unveiled at Heidelberg Raceway to honor its rich legacy. The dedication of the blue and yellow Pennsylvania Historical Marker located next to the King’s restaurant at Raceway Plaza will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday and include state and local dignitaries along with racing experts. Heidelberg officials have worked in recent year to have a historical marker erected at the old raceway after learning the last ever Big Top circus in the country closed its tents in the track’s infield. The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus had its final show under the famous Big Top at the racetrack on July 16, 1956 before sports arenas or convention center were …

Yesterday was great! So glad to see the recognition the race track deserves! My first dates with my husband were him taking me to Heidelberg Racetrack! We woud ride to the track in the tow truck and he would drop me off at the stands and he would go into the pits. He drove a figure 8 race one time and I thought that was the end! If someone had pictures of the track of any kind I'm sure they could…   more ›

Patch Picks: Five Books for Summer

We suggest five favorite books to kick-off Summer Reading.

Fiction: Kristin Bair O’Keefe’s “Thirsty: A Novel” explores the life of a Croatian emigrant, Klara, living in Thirsty, a hapless community vertical slope above the Pittsburgh steel industry, not unlike Clairton, Pa. Set in the late 19th Century, Bair O’Keefe’s novel explores oppression and poverty. Although, fraught with grim images of brutality and cruelty, there are moments of exquisite joy, artfully rendered by a superb storyteller.  The book is a deeply personal account of hard-scrabbled lives of Pittsburgh’s immigrant communities; penniless foreigners who hoped for a brighter future for their children, our own foremothers. Short-Stories: There’s murder in McKees Rocks in “Pittsburgh Noir,” a compilation of short stories set in the …
