Collier Township Lowers Property Tax Millage Rate

See what you’ll pay in township property taxes this year after the Allegheny County reassessment.

Collier Township earlier this month lowered its property tax millage rate, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be paying less taxes. The commissioner voted earlier this month to lower its tax rate from 3.5 mills to 2.73 mills, according to township Manager Sal Sirabella. The decrease was required by state law after Allegheny County conducted a reassessment and sent each municipality certified property values in December. The communities must remain “revenue neutral” so they do not generate a massive windfall from the assessment. Overall, the township’s certified property values increased by a little more than 30 percent, according to Chartiers Valley School District Business Manager Nick Morelli. The numbers could still change, …

Allegheny County Reassessment Wreaks Havoc on Property Tax Rates

The Allegheny County property reassessment and appeals are wreaking havoc on local communities trying to figure out their 2013 budgets.

The Allegheny County property reassessment and parade of appeals are wreaking havoc on local communities trying to figure our their 2013 budgets and tax rates. The problems arise from the uncertainty of what the actual final assessment will yield since thousands of county property owners challenged the numbers and many have had them reduced. The final numbers won’t be released to each community until mid-December, making it nearly impossible for government officials to hone in on a property tax rate. However, each town must advertise that millage rate now and pass its budget before the end of the year. “This is a shot in the dark,” Scott Township Board of Commissioners President Tom Castello said. To add to the mess, the towns are …

Halted Walgreens Development Costing CV Taxpayers Thousands in Revenue

The removal of the Shoppes on Bower Hill has wiped out thousands of property tax dollars from the Scott Township and Chartiers Valley School District coffers.

Nearly a year has passed since demolition crews ripped down the former Shoppes on Bower Hill and the plans to build a new Walgreens or any retail business at the site seem to have fizzled. There still are chain-linked fences around piles of rubble where the popular strip mall once stood, and the area has become an eyesore and parking nightmare for people who work at St. Clair Hospital and the rehab center, bank, orthopedic doctor and medical services building. Scott Township leaders don’t know why the project isn’t moving forward and Walgreens no longer seems to have any interest in building anything on the location at Bower Hill and North Wren. “We don’t know what’s going on,” Scott Township Manager Denise Fitzgerald said. “I’m very …

@Dan... I completely agree with your sentiment. I wrote this column last October when they began tearing down the strip mall. That shopping center had everything and it's a shame it's been replaced by rubble... http://chartiersvalley.patch.com/articles/bower-hill-shoppes-finally-coming-down   more ›

Fitzgerald Says Reassessment is 'Null and Void'

Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald said he won't use the new property assessments.

Chief Executive Rich Fitzgerald said it over and over again during a press conference Thursday afternoon: When it comes to property tax reassessment, Allegheny County shouldn’t be singled out. That’s one reason Fitzgerald said he directed the certification of the assessed property values for 2012 taxation purposes using the 2002 tax year figures. For Pittsburgh area property owners, that means the assessment numbers they received in the mail last week are “null and void.” Only Pittsburgh and Mt. Oliver property owners have received the new assessments. New notices would be sent out Thursday, Fitzgerald said, and those are “the ones that matter.” And he was clear: Despite a court order mandated property tax reassessment, he is following all…

Bill... Are you questioning the legality or ethics of the decisions? Or are you just disagreeing with it? And I've already pointed out that Judge Wettick will be receiving a tax cut because his property increased by 29 percent. Regardless, I'll make sure to do some digging around once people in Scott, Heidelberg, Bridgeville and Collier have problems.   more ›
