Emergency crews didn't have to travel far to respond to cars crashes within 36 hours of each other near Kirwan Heights. Firefighters responded to a single-car accident on Vanadium Road at Main Street in Scott Township around 11 p.m. Friday when a Jeep crashed and rolled over. The crash happened right next to the Bower Hill Volunteer Fire Department, which responded with the assistance of East Carnegie and Glendale firefighters and Scott Township police. A 35-percent transit service cut has been postponed for a year because of union concessions and more funding from the state and Allegheny County.
The Port Authority's board of directors agreed Tuesday morning to postpone a 35-percent transit service reduction and layoffs for one year. The cuts were expected to take effect Sept. 2. The board also ratified a four-year contract with the Local 85 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, which calls for two years of wage freezes and increases of workers' contributions to the pension fund. The union commitment provides $60 million in savings to the Port Authority over four years, or an average $15 million a year. The four-year deal will expire on June 30, 2016. The contract includes: Port Authority management also has stepped up by providing an additional $10 million in savings achieved by increasing pension contributions of non-represented …

Local 85 of the Amalgamated Transit Union ratified a four-year contract with a wage freeze in an effort to prevent layoffs and service cuts, including at the Collier Garage.
Tentative transit service cuts and layoffs could be prevented due to the union's agreement to a new four-year contract with a wage freeze and other concessions. According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Local 85 of the Amalgamated Transit Union voted in favor of the contract—retroactive to July 1, it calls for two years of wage freezes and increases of workers' contributions to the pension fund—in two voting sessions at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center on Sunday. For contract details, click here. The agreement now will be considered for approval by the Port Authority Board on Tuesday. A special meeting has been scheduled for 10 a.m. in the Neal H. Holmes Board Room, 345 Sixth Ave., Fifth Floor, in Downtown Pittsburgh. “…

A tentative contract agreement that could prevent Port Authority service cuts has been reached.
The Port Authority, the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 85 and Allegheny County have reached a tentative contract agreement. If approved, the agreement is the first step in preventing the 35 percent service cuts, resulting in layoffs and closing of the Collier Garage and various park and ride lots around the area. The cuts were scheduled to take effect in September. That agreement will be considered by the Local 85 membership on Aug. 19 and the Port Authority Board, which will meet in the days following the union vote. Details will be made public at that time. Continue to follow Patch as details become available.

A deal between the state, Allegheny County and union officials is being negotiated to stave off massive Port Authority service cuts and garage closures.
A deal is in the works to avoid drastic cuts to Port Authority service this fall, according to a report by KDKA. According to the report, negotiations between state, Allegheny County and union officials are underway to avoid a one-third cut in service—which would reduce or eliminate many bus routes to the South Hills and close the Collier Garage—on Sept. 2. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald told KDKA that if the union, management and county can come up with about $30 million, Gov. Tom Corbett will match that amount and restore service. The Port Authority already increased fares on July 1 and eliminated several trolley stops in an attempt to raise revenue and streamline services. Many riders in the South Hills face service cuts or …

Increases go into effect on most Port Authority fares, tickets and passes.
Starting July 1, increases go into effect on most Port Authority of Allegheny County fares, including cash fares for full-fare and half-fare riders, all tickets and passes. According to a news release, the fare increases are required to balance Port Authority's budget for the fiscal year of 2013, which begins on July 1. The base one-zone cash fare will increase by $0.25 from $2.25 to $2.50 one way. Two-zone rides will increase by $0.50 from $3.25 to $3.75 one way. Additionally, fare changes will go into effect for ACCESS riders that same day. Many riders in the South Hills also face potential service cuts or route eliminations later this year if a dedicated revenue source is not found for mass transit in the state. The Collier Garage …

State Rep. Martin Michael Schmotzer from Whitehall wants a summer legislative session on transportation.
State Rep. Martin Michael Schmotzer will only be in office for the rest of this year, but the Democrat from Whitehall Borough is hoping to make the best use of his time. Schmotzer is calling for a moratorium on further mass transit cuts in Allegheny County and a special summer session of the Pennsylvania Legislature to deal with transportation funding. Under the cuts that will be implemented later this year, many South Hills neighborhoods would be left without bus routes or decreased service. "The Port Authority of Allegheny County is dying a death by a thousand cuts," Schmotzer said in a news release. "We're at the point where, if the next round of cuts goes through—cutting 46 of the remaining 102 bus routes—we will not have a viable and …

Thirteen stops on Port Authority’s light rail lines will be eliminated on June 25. The stops selected for elimination were identified due to their low boarding counts and proximity to other stops. The longest distance any rider affected by the change would have to travel to reach another light rail stop is about 650 yards. Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald last month called on Port Authority to make several changes to improve the efficiency of the system, including consolidation of light rail stops. "I’m glad to see the authority work proactively to address this issue. I understand that these stops were selected because the ridership was low and because there are alternative stops relatively close," stated Fitzgerald. "While our …

The Democratic Policy Committee will hold a public hearing Thursday at 10 a.m. on the economic impact of public transit cuts. State Representatives Dan Deasy and Matt Smith, both Democrats representing districts in Allegheny County, will co-chair the hearing. "We have heard from many constituents on how the proposed cuts to the Port Authority will impact them, but the outcry from area businesses has greatly increased in recent months," Smith said. "They are being hit from both sides with reduced accessibility for customers and employees." Under the proposed cuts that would be effective Sept. 2, weekday service to many neighborhoods would reduced or eliminated. The cuts would also eliminate the Collier Garage located off Route 50 near …

A funding agreement between the Pittsburgh Steelers, Rivers Casino and Port Authority—brokered by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald—will provide free rides on the T light rail system between downtown Pittsburgh and Allegheny Station next to Heinz Field. The three-year agreement with the pro football team and casino will extend the T’s Free Fare Zone to Allegheny Station when it opens on March 25. The light rail vehicle station is located near Heinz Field and Rivers Casino on the North Shore. “We appreciate the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Rivers Casino stepping up and providing service to the Allegheny Station,” Fitzgerald said. “This Free Fare Zone provides easy access to Heinz Field and the Rivers Casino, but also extends our …
