Skate Park Coming to Carnegie

Carnegie Park will be the site of a sprawling new skateboarding and BMX biking facility. Carnegie was chosen over locations in Scott Township and Mt. Lebanon.

Carnegie will be the site of a sprawling new skateboarding park. Mary Pitcher, the Scott Township woman who has worked for years to build a skate park in her late sons’ memory, chose Carnegie Park for the location of her dream. “I don’t know how to explain it,” Pitcher said. “It’s been so long. I’ve just really wanted to get it done. It’s great to see it finally coming to a home.” Pitcher and organizers had considered similar plans in Scott Township and Mt. Lebanon, but Carnegie Park’s terrain and proximity to major roads and nearby neighborhoods made it an obvious choice. “The flow of Carnegie Park with the hillside there is perfect,” Pitcher said. The skate park has been a project years in the making. Pitcher originally hoped to build …

Feedback Wanted for Scott Skatepark

Scott Township officials are asking for the public’s feedback on whether or not to build a $600,000 skateboarding facility in Scott Park.

Scott Township officials are asking for the public’s feedback on whether or not to build a skateboarding area in Scott Park. Residents and others interested in the skate park should attend the township commissioners’ Aug. 14 meeting at 7:30 p.m. Those who wish to speak on the issue will be allowed to offer their input on the proposal and whether the township should pursue building the facility. Mary Pitcher, who lives in Scott Township, has said she would like to build the skateboarding and BMX bike facility at Scott Park, Carnegie or Mt. Lebanon. Pitcher has said the $600,000 skate park would be fully funded through donations and fundraising efforts, and the municipality would only be responsible for annual maintenance. The community that…

I think it's a great idea...kids today, don't have places to go and do things that would keep them out of trouble. This is a good way to keep them active and healthy.   more ›

Scott Township Unsure About Skatepark

Scott Township officials are interested in having it built in the community, but unsure about where to place it at Scott Park.

Scott Township officials want to remain in the running for a proposed skateboarding park, but are concerned they won’t be able to find a suitable place for it at Scott Park. Township resident Mary Pitcher proposed to build a $600,000 skate park so area kids have a safe place to skateboard, bike and skate. She also has made pitches to Mt. Lebanon and Carnegie, saying she’s looking for the community that wants it the most. During their Tuesday night board meeting, the commissioners mostly agreed the skating facility would be a nice addition to the township, but they were unsure if the proposed area has enough room or would change the family feel of the park. “I have some concerns,” Commissioner Bill Wells said. “I don’t like where it’s …

I think it's a great idea. My kids are bmx(ers) and have to travel far to have access to a skate park. We live in Collier so, i'd like to see it in Collier, Scott, Heidelberg or Carnegie. This would make a wonderful addition to any park and so many kids could have a good place to spend their time doing things to keep them busy and out of trouble.   more ›

Skate Park Pitched For Scott Township

A Scott Township resident wants to build a multi-use skateboarding facility in Scott Park.

A Scott Township resident wants to build a multi-use skateboarding facility in Scott Park so it can become an attraction for youths of all ages in the South Hills. Mary Pitcher told Scott Township commissioners during their Tuesday night workshop meeting that they’re pitching the skate park to other South Hills communities, but Scott Park would be ideal. “I’ve got to admit; Scott Park is absolutely beautiful,” she said. Pitcher and Alexis Aggazio-Bach, who is helping with public relations on the project, presented details of the park so the commissioners could decide if they want it in the township. Mt. Lebanon and Carnegie officials have also expressed interest in building the $600,000 skate park, which would be fully funded through …

sounds good -- except the part about the corporate funding. celeb skaters like Tony Hawk and Rob Dyrdek are joined with corporations to build these things all over the country -- uh, corporations and skate-celebs do not have the public interest at heart and should be nowhere near developing public spaces. http://bit.ly/L766Jv   more ›

Skatepark Proposed for Scott Park

A Scott resident wants a skatepark to be built in the township or other South Hills communities.

Could a skatepark be coming to Scott Park? A Scott resident, who tried to have a skatepark in Dormont only for it to be rejected there, is now pushing for it to be built in the township or other South Hills communities. But the township commissioners are uncertain about the funding plan and want to know a lot more about the concept before even discussing it. The township was approached recently by Mary Pitcher, who wants to build the skatepark as a way to remember two of her sons after they drowned in July 2008 while at a reservoir in the Allegheny National Forest. The family originally lived in Dormont, but Pitcher has relocated to Scott Township. Dormont Park appeared to be the prime location for the skatepark, but the council there …
