Breast Cancer Study Holds Hope for Patients

Breast cancer kills 12,000 women in Pennsylvania each year but a new study holds hope for patients and the doctors who treat them. Wednesday was the last day of Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Researchers have unveiled what they believe is a hallmark study for breast cancer patients and the doctors who treat them, according to the Pa. Breast Cancer Coalition. Their findings, recently published in the journal Nature and the New York Times, are expected to pave the way for new treatment options in the coming years. The project, funded by a large federal grant, focused on a genetic analysis of breast cancer, which kills more than 12,000 women in Pennsylvania each year.  The scientists monitored the tumors of 825 breast cancer patients in the US. As a result, they found four distinctive types of breast cancer. Within those types, researchers say they identified at least 40 genetic alterations that might be attacked by drugs. Many of…

Don’t Let the Pink Spirit End

Maintain healthy habits and deep relationships even after Breast Cancer Awareness month.

With the Breast Cancer Awareness month of October now over, it will be sad not to see everything all decked out pink. The media, Hollywood, professional sports, national businesses, government and the whole country have really taken breast cancer awareness to a new height this year. In addition to 300-pound linebackers donning their pink accessories and being willing to donate some of their millions to restaurants creating special dishes and bow-shaped bagels, even the kids are jumping on the bandwagon. And, they are even aware of what it’s about, too. I pointed out the pink socks on the Tiny Mite football players to my 8-year old cheerleader to introduce the subject, and she said “Oh, that’s for breast cancer awareness. Can I wear pink, …
