Collier Park Opens For Business

Collier Community Park’s ball fields and numerous courts officially opened Thursday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new deck hockey rink by sports radio host Mark Madden and other local dignitaries.

Collier Community Park’s ball fields and numerous courts officially opened Thursday morning with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new deck hockey rink. Local and state dignitaries, along with sports radio host Mark Madden, cut the red ribbon to welcome residents to use the deck hockey rink and the other amenities that are sprouting up in the 72-acre park. Most in attendance could not believe how much work had been done in the past nine months to transform the former Nike Site military base with barracks and old buildings into a state-of-the-art park. But Madden said the best is still to come when kids and their families are playing in the park and the sparkling new deck hockey rink. “If you want to see a bigger change, come back in a few …

Ribbon-Cutting to Open Collier Community Park

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning to officially open the courts and fields at the new Collier Community Park at the former Nike site.

There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday morning to officially open the courts and fields at the new Collier Community Park at the former Nike site. The old fitness center and barracks on the sprawling former military base were razed last year, giving room to build soccer fields, basketball courts, a deck hockey rink, playground and other amenities. “It’s one more step,” Collier Township Manager Sal Sirabella said. “You’re going to be surprised when you see it. It’s pretty impressive.” State Reps. Matt Smith and Nick Kotik, along with Allegheny County Councilman Mike Finnerty will be on hand for the ribbon-cutting that begin at 10 a.m. Thursday. This is just another phase in the construction of the community park at the former Nike…

Collier Gets $150k Grant for New Park

The township has made changes to Collier Township Community Park and will raze the fitness center.

Collier Township received a $150,000 grant this month to begin work on its new 72-acre community park at the former Nike Site military complex. The commissioners originally requested $500,000, which comes from the Allegheny County Redevelopment Authority’s Community Infrastructure Tourism Fund that helps area projects. The money will help pay to raze nine buildings and other structures in February to make room for fields and other amenities at the new Collier Township Community Park. The commissioners also decided to demolish the fitness center, which had been open since June and only had 13 members, and instead build a multi-purpose gymnasium. “I think (the fitness center) was a thought and the commissioners felt that we could do better…

It's great to learn that Mr. Sirabella has been hired as Collier Township's Borough Manager. It would be great waste of his talent for landing polical appontment after political appointment if he had find employment in the private sector.   more ›

Collier Community Park Makes Progress

Work on the former Nike Site military base could begin next spring.

Plans for Collier Community Park are rapidly moving forward and work could begin on the former Nike Site military base by the spring. “We’ve been planning this for ever,” Commissioner Kay Downey-Clarke said. “Now that we own (the site) we’re ready.” During their workshop meeting Wednesday night, the Collier Township commissioners voted to request a $500,000 grant from the Allegheny County “gaming economic development fund.” If awarded that money, the township would put up an additional $250,000, which would be enough to get the first phase of the project off the ground. “It’s another opportunity, with the other grants we’ve received, to fund Collier Park,” township Manager Sal Sirabella said. The first phase would include a deck hockey …

Sandra... I think a sledding hill will be available with the amphitheater seating area, and a "dog park" will be more like a dog walk area with the trails. But the commissioners seem to think a pool will be far too costly throughout the years.   more ›

Student Video Promotes Collier's Oktoberfest

Watch a short preview video about this weekend's Oktoberfest at Collier Community Park.

This Oktoberfest video was filmed and edited by Chariters Valley High School students Sean Gracy, Ricky Reinoso and Connor Lindsay. All of them went to different locations to film footage and share editing duties. The two girls in the video are Nikki Miller and Tayler Ondik. The video promo of the Oktoberfest took five days to complete. Sean and Ricky are part of the Leadership class at CV High School, where students can become teacher assistants. The other students are part of the TV/Media Production Class. Collier Township is planning a two-day Oktoberfest that will allow residents to enjoy the autumn weather and grab a glimpse of the new community park. Military Hands Over Nike Site to Collier

Township plans to turn the 72-acre base into a sprawling community park.

Collier Township officially owns the 72-acre Nike Site military base. Township commissioners voted Wednesday night to formally take over the military installation, now named Collier Community Park, more than six years after the federal Base Realignment and Closure commission decided to shutter the missile base. The township has spent the past few years deciding how to use the base to benefit the community. “That was a lot of effort,” board President Bob Schuler said after the unanimous vote to accept the property. “Many hours were spent. It has been a labor of love, and it feels good.” The township first had to decide how to use the property and then what steps would be needed to implement that plan. The former Charles E. Kelly Support …

Collier Working Hard to Find its Identity

Township wants to become more attractive to outsiders.

Stretching 13-square miles from Bridgeville to the Parkway West, Collier Township’s immense geographic size makes it difficult to pinpoint its specific identity. Nevillewood and the Panhandle Trail are prominent destinations of the township that includes more than 7,000 people. But Collier officials are now working on finding a way to define the township for outsiders who may be interested in moving to the area. Collier Township Manager Sal Sirabella said during the township’s Wednesday night meeting that enhanced signage could help build that image. But he said there needs to be an overarching branding plan with suggestions from the community officials and residents. “We have one dynamic community with the traditional, various …
