One person is in custody following an early-morning standoff at a Collier Township residence.
One person is in custody following an early-morning standoff at a Nevillewood area residence. Collier Township police Chief Tom Devin said they were called to a Hilltop Road apartment complex around 3:30 a.m. Sunday for a man who claimed to have hostages. Police were able to take the 33-year-old man into custody around 8 a.m. at the Waterford Nevillewood apartment complex. Devin said he did not have hostages, but he was taken to an area hospital for a mental evaluation. Devin said charges would be filed against the man. It’s not known what prompted the standoff with authorities, but police are continuing to investigate. Continue to monitor Chartiers Valley Patch as more details become available. A couple of restaurants, including Aiden's Irish Pub, didn’t last long and the complex is still in search of an anchor tenant to fill the void.
The Forsythe Market Place just below the exclusive Nevillewood neighborhood Collier Township doesn’t have a lot of traffic in it anymore. A couple of restaurants didn’t last long and the complex is still in search of an anchor tenant to fill the void. Most recently, Aiden’s Irish Pub took the prominent space but closed in Summer 2011 after being open for less than a year. Before that, there was a fine dining restaurant that never seemed to gain traction at the lucrative location on Forsythe Road below Nevillewood. It isn’t quite Ocean’s 11, but Collier Township police are investigating a monumental jewelry heist in the Nevillewood neighborhood. A resident living on St. Mellion Drive reported to police on Oct. 20 that nearly $52,000 worth of jewelry was apparently stolen from her home. The jewelry apparently was taken in early October, but police said she only recently discovered the apparent theft because it was “good jewelry” that isn’t worn often. In all, the missing jewelry is valued at $51,800. “To me, that’s a good bit of money, a good bit of jewelry,” Collier police Chief Thomas Devin said. “I think it was a lot of jewelry.” Police said there did not appear to be a break-in at the home, so investigators are interviewing people who may have …

Township meeting revealed frustrations about the dumping going on at Hilltop Park.
Shemariah Little moved from the North Side to Collier Township after nearly getting shot in a drive-by shooting. At the time, she appreciated the school district, the new opportunities and the beautiful neighborhood. Now, she is one of many community members that expressed their frustration and concern during the Collier Township Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday night about the dumping at Hilltop Park. "I didn’t move from the city to the suburbs to live across the street from a dirt pile," Little said. The dumping, which has been going on for years according to citizens, has increased in frequency the past few weeks. Township wants to become more attractive to outsiders.
Stretching 13-square miles from Bridgeville to the Parkway West, Collier Township’s immense geographic size makes it difficult to pinpoint its specific identity. Nevillewood and the Panhandle Trail are prominent destinations of the township that includes more than 7,000 people. But Collier officials are now working on finding a way to define the township for outsiders who may be interested in moving to the area. Collier Township Manager Sal Sirabella said during the township’s Wednesday night meeting that enhanced signage could help build that image.
