Freezing Rain & Snow Expected for Morning Commute in Pittsburgh Area

A wintry mix of precipitation was expected to begin Sunday night and continue into the Monday morning commute.

The National Weather Service in Pittsburgh has issued a winter weather advisory for the Pittsburgh region until 2 p.m. Monday. A period of snow and freezing rain was expected overnight Sunday, before changing to all rain by Monday afternoon. A winter weather advisory means that snow, sleet, or freezing rain will make travel difficult. Here's a more detailed look at the forecast:

Crashes on I-79 Cause Big Delays

A crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 79 near the Southpointe exit backed up traffic in both directions Tuesday morning.

UPDATE: 8:35 a.m. - PennDOT announced via Twitter that the southbound crash has been cleared from the highway. A crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 79 near the Southpointe exit backed up traffic in both directions Tuesday morning. The crash happened around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday and caused heavy delays. It’s not known how many cars were involved in the crash or if anyone was injured. A line of cars could be seen backed up past the Bridgeville exit until 8:30 a.m. A motorist posting on Twitter said the crash caused a second accident in the northbound lanes, prompting more delays in the Canonsburg area. Mixture of Snow and Freezing Rain Expected During Monday Morning Commute in Pittsburgh

A storm that could bring snow and freezing rain is expected to hit the area shortly after midnight Monday.

The Monday morning rush hour is shaping up to be troublesome with a storm that could bring snow and freezing rain to the South Hills of Pittsburgh. The National Weather service in Pittsburgh has issued a winter weather advisory from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday for most of western Pennsylvania. A mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected overnight into Monday morning. Because very cold ground and snow pack, roads and sidewalks are expected to be icy. This storm comes just a few days after the South Hills were hit with about 5 inches of snow Friday and Saturday. The storm caused numerous traffic accidents and delays around the area.
