Collier Agrees to Provide School Resource Officers

Collier Township has agreed to provide “school resource officers” for the Chartiers Valley middle/high school and primary campuses. Find out when they could being walking the halls of the schools.

Collier Township agreed to provide “school resource officers” for the Chartiers Valley middle/high school and primary campuses, and they could begin walking the halls as early as February. The commissioners voted unanimously Wednesday night to approve a contract with the school district that outlines the roles of the police officers, who commands them and reimbursement to the township. This comes just a week after the township appeared to be taking its time to study the issue despite several area residents urging the commissioners to hire the school resource officers. Township Manager Sal Sirabella said they weren’t far from agreeing to the program, but a variety of factors accelerated the agreement. “It was a lot of work done between the …

I'm glad to hear they were able to work out a contract and the officers will be receiving more training! Our children's safety is the most important thing here and as a parent of children at the high school and primary school i'm happy to know the officers may be there as soon as February.   more ›

Residents Urge Collier Township to Hire School Resource Officer

But Collier officials said they want to “get it right” and probably won’t make a decision on the school security program for another two months.

At Collier Township’s voting meeting last week, several area residents urged municipal officials to immediately install a school resource officer at the middle/high and primary campuses. But Collier officials said they want to “get it right” and are continuing to examine how to implement the program and how it fits into overall school security. Township Manager Sal Sirabella said a school resource officer is a “key element” to school safety, but is not the only aspect. “There have to be other improvements,” Sirabella said. “This is just one small part to make a school safe. The school board recognizes it. So does the police chief and township commissioners. It becomes a huge, continuous effort, and the school resource officer is one …

The SRO program has been in the works for over 2 years so this is not about rushing a plan. Fact is the commissioners need to sign the agreement and we need the community to stand as a solid front.   more ›

CV Holding School Safety Drill

Chartiers Valley students will participate in a “safety drill” Tuesday to prepare them in case of an emergency on the middle/high school campus or nearby in the community.

Chartiers Valley middle and high school students will participate in a “safety drill” Tuesday to prepare them in case of an emergency on campus or nearby in the community. The drill, the details of which were still being finalized Monday afternoon, will involve both students and teachers on how to react should there be an armed intruder inside the building or if it must be locked down for other reasons. The school district notified parents of the safety drill in a letter posted on its website last Friday. Superintendent Brian White Jr. said they will also conduct a “safety visit” to each classroom at the intermediate and primary schools this week. The changes being made makes me happy and a little less stressed about my kids safety. Although, I do feel a criminal can attempt access at any of the buildings doors, not just the main entrance. I’d like to see all possible entry ways protected. Also, the office or security desks should have monitors able to view all entry points. Possibly a metal detector at the main entrances to ensure that …   more ›

Collier Still Considering Putting Police Officers in Chartiers Valley Schools

A Collier Township official said there’s a “good chance” school resource officers could be working inside the Chartiers Valley middle/high and primary schools next year.

There’s a “good chance” school resource officers could be working inside the Chartiers Valley middle/high and primary schools next year. Collier Township commissioners and several Chartiers Valley School District officials met Wednesday to discuss implementing the program and the role the police officers would play while at the schools. Bob Schuler, president of the Collier Board of Commissioners, said they were concerned about making sure the township was ultimately in control of the police officers and that they weren’t just security guards. “It was a good meeting,” Schuler said. “A good discussion.” Chartiers Valley Superintendent Brian While Jr. and school directors Pam Poletti, Debbie Rice, Jamie Stevenson and Sandy Zeleznik met with …

CV Might Put Police Officers in Schools

The school district is working with police to place “school resource officers” inside the three campuses.

Chartiers Valley School District officials first thing Monday morning met with the police chiefs in Collier and Scott to review school security and how it can be improved. Superintendent Brian White Jr. spent the morning with Collier police Chief Tom Devin and Scott police Chief Jim Secreet and they discussed the possibility of adding a police officer to the district’s three school campuses. In a letter to parents Monday, White said they made the formal request to both police departments to have a “school resource officers” at the middle/high school, primary school and intermediate school. “The school district is making preparations to substantially fund this effort from our existing budget,” White wrote in the letter. CV Looking For Energy Savings

The school district is thinking about upgrading its buildings to find energy savings.

As the Chartiers Valley Middle-High School campus continues to age, district officials are thinking about upgrading the buildings to find elusive energy savings. The school board invited an energy engineer to its Tuesday night workshop meeting in order to learn details about how energy saving audits work and what problems might surface. John Mier of Mier Energy Engineer said school districts have to be careful that savings be calculated properly and not be less than the cost of the long-term loans to make the upgrades. He pointed to some audits that might overstate the energy savings depending or overprice the construction costs. “If you go into an energy savings contract it’s really important that you drive the bus,” Mier said. The …
