Slots and Poker Tournaments Return to The Meadows

There is a guaranteed prize pool of $400,000; with top prizes of $100,000 each.

As a result of popular guest demand, officials from The Meadows Racetrack & Casino this week announced it will again host a $200,000 Blackjack Tournament with multi-day satellite tournaments leading up to the main event scheduled for Dec. 8.  Simultaneously, the North Strabane destination will host a $200,000 Slots Tournament, which includes a similar satellite-style format and which will conclude with a grand-prize event on Dec. 15. The Meadows hosted the largest black tournament in Pennsylvania earlier this year. Man Hits $1.19 Million Slots Jackpot at The Meadows

A man from Morgantown, W.Va. hit The Meadows Casino jackpot that had been building for months.

A West Virginia man is leaving the state $1.19 million happier tonight. A spokesman for The Meadows Racetrack & Casino confirmed Thursday afternoon that a "frequent visitor" to the venue struck the slots jackpot, which was $1,192,562 to be exact. The winner did not want his name released, according to the spokesman, who added that the jackpot had been building for months. This story originally appeared on Canon-McMillan Patch

Backlash Against Franco Harris is Unwarranted

The backlash from the Penn State sex abuse scandal is now targeting the wrong people.

The fallout from the Penn State sex abuse scandal continued to spread this week and now threatens to take down another famous Nittany Lion. But this time around, it’s the immaculate reputation of legendary Steelers running back Franco Harris that’s under fire as he doggedly defends his former college football coach, Joe Paterno. Franco said he disagreed with the immediate firing of Paterno, despite the common belief that JoePa didn’t do enough to report an accused child molester to authorities. However, his point is that it’s time to set aside raw emotions, put down the pitch forks and try to gather all of the facts about who knew what and when. And I think he’s right. Mike, people of many stripes have tried to take the high moral ground. I continue to wonder why so many people have to make comment (e.g. Santorium, Solobay, etc) on this issue. Yes, there is plenty of irony to be spread around when looking at the list of those offering a moral perspective.   more ›
