Garbage pick-up will not be affected by the Martin Luther King holiday on Monday. Waste Management, which covers many South Hills communities, including South Fayette and Bridgeville, announced that it will continue with normal track pick-up on Monday and the rest of the week. Anyone with questions is asked to call customer services at 800-866-4460 or visit Waste Management’s website at www.wm.com. The Greater Pittsburgh Habitat for Humanity branch will conduct 25 service projects with 500 volunteers to remember Martin Luther King Jr.'s service legacy.
Habitat for Humanity of Greater Pittsburgh will host its second annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service event on Monday. The affordable housing nonprofit has organized 25 different service projects across the region with more than 500 volunteers registered to make their traditional day off a “day on” with Habitat. The MLK Day of Service is the largest volunteer effort in the region for the holiday—and volunteers will put in about 3,500 hours of service. The volunteers will be working in 17 different neighborhoods around greater Pittsburgh. There is no school for students in the Chartiers Valley School District on Monday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, and many other places are also closed. With the school campus being empty, area police departments will be conducting an active shooter drill at the high school to help train officers. Meanwhile, all local and county government offices are also closed, along with U.S. Post Offices and magisterial courts. State liquor stores, most banks and PennDOT driver license and photo centers will not be open. The Bridgeville and Scott Township public libraries will remain open today, although South Fayette's library will be closed. The Port Authority of Allegheny County will operate regular bus, T and incline service. …
