One of two men accused of burglarizing a Scott Township building and stealing copper to sell for scrap is going to trial on the charges. Charles Grodes, 36, of Upper St. Clair, waived to court charges of theft and trespassing during his preliminary hearing with District Judge Gary Zyra on March 21. He is being held on $10,000 bond and his formal arraignment is scheduled for May 8. Scott Township police said Grodes and Dale Brannan, 48, of Carnegie, entered a building in the 200 block of Noblestown Road on Jan. 25 and took an undisclosed amount of copper. Charges of receiving stolen property, retail theft conspiracy and possessing an instrument of crime against Micaela L. Carpenter, 27, of Pittsburgh were held for court during her preliminary hearing with District Judge Gary Zyra on March 7. Meanwhile, Eric Swan, 26, of Pittsburgh, waived to court charges of retail theft, conspiracy, receiving stolen property and possessing instruments of crime during his March 7 preliminary hearing with Zyra. The man accused of numerous smash-and-grab car break-ins last year in Bridgeville is heading to trial on dozens of charges related to the thefts Phillip Acosta, 26, formerly of Bridgeville, waived to court 23 counts of criminal mischief, 18 counts of theft from a motor vehicle, 16 counts of receiving stolen property and six counts of criminal attempt before his preliminary hearing with District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet on Feb. 15. Investigators said Acosta admitted to many of the more than 20 “smash-and-grab” car break-ins that occurred in the borough in January 2012. A Washington County man accused of driving drunk in Heidelberg with his young daughter in the car waived the most serious charges to court. John Bonacci, 43, of Washington, waived to court charges of drunken driving, child endangerment, careless driving, reckless driving and several traffic citations before his preliminary hearing with District Judge Gary M. Zyra on Feb. 7. Three counts of reckless endangerment were withdrawn by Heidelberg police. Police said they stopped Bonacci on Dec. 4 and found him to be impaired while driving with the young girl in the vehicle. Two men accused of breaking-in to two Scott Township homes in the Birdland neighborhood earlier this month are heading to trial on burglary and other charges.
Two men accused of breaking-in to two Scott Township homes earlier this month are heading to trial on burglary and other charges. Brian Butt, 27, of Bridgeville, and Grant Goeckeler, 29, of Scott, are accused of burglarizing a home in the 1300 block of Meadowlark Drive shortly on Jan. 8. Scott Township police said the resident came home and found the door open and markings on a rear door. Police said they later found Butt and Goeckeler nearby with some of the items allegedly stolen from the house. A Pittsburgh teen who was caught on cell phone video discharging a fire extinguisher at a Scott Township pizza restaurant is heading to trial on some of the charges. Jacob R. Stewart, 19, waived to court charges of risking a catastrophe, criminal mischief, theft and five counts of reckless endangerment before his preliminary hearing with District Judge Gary M. Zyra on Jan. 17. Numerous other charges, including multiple counts of simple assault and conspiracy, were withdrawn by police. Scott Township police said Stewart took a fire extinguisher from the Pizza Hut on Greentree Road and discharged it as a prank on Nov. 29. Two Scott Township residents accused of stealing scrap metal and trying to sell it are heading to trial on theft and other charges. Joshua Popp, 29, and Amanda Mayfield, 25, both of Scott Township, had charges of theft, receiving stolen property and trespassing held for court during their preliminary hearing with District Judge Gary Zyra on Dec. 20. Scott Township police said the two took scrap metal from the 200 block of Hope Street on Oct. 9 and were found trying to sell it at All American Metals. One count of driving on a suspended license against Popp and a drug paraphernalia charge against Mayfield were also held for court during the hearing. A caregiver accused of bilking an elderly woman out of $11,000 last year is heading to trial on more than two dozen forgery charges. Beverly A. Seifert, 52, of Findlay Township, waived her right to a preliminary hearing on 25 charges of forgery and one count each of theft, access device fraud and bad checks. Her preliminary hearing with District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet was held on Dec. 10. Collier police say she was working as a caregiver for a Fairacre Court resident whose “health was declining” and used the woman’s checks and credit cards to spend $11,000 over the past year.
