Observing Passover in Pittsburgh: What You Need to Know

Here is a list of resources, events and services in honor of the Jewish observance.

It's almost time to break out the matzo. Passover arrives on March 25 this year, when Jews across the world will come together to retell the Exodus story over four cups of wine (or grape juice for those who can't indulge), and of course, a large, festive feast. Passover Traditions As the story goes, during their flight from slavery, the Jews did not have enough time for their dough to rise, resulting in a flaky cracker that is eaten instead of bread for a full week during Passover. The diet changes go beyond bread, however, and depend on family tradition. Hanukkah 2012 in the South Hills of Pittsburgh

Hanukkah begins tonight! Celebrate the Festival of Lights in the Pittsburgh area with these events and recipes.

This year, Hanukkah begins on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 8, and ends a week later on Sunday, Dec. 16. According to Chabad.org, Hanukkah starts on the Hebrew calendar date of 25 Kislev and lasts for eight days. For those of us who aren't attuned to the Jewish calendar, that translates to sundown on Saturday, Dec. 8.  Click here to see the events planned for the holiday at the Jewish Community Center South Hills in Scott Township. Seminar Will Help Seniors Spot Scams

The JCC and state Rep. Matt Smith are sponsoring the event to teach seniors, relatives and caretakers how to avoid problems.

State Rep. Matt Smith is organizing an “Older & Wiser” program for seniors to protect them from scams and abuse. The Friday event at the Jewish Community Center in Scott Township will offer a free informational seminar to seniors, their family members and caregivers on how to avoid fraud, scams, predatory lending and identity theft. The Neighborhood Legal Services Association is teaming up with Smith to put on the event that they hope will make people more aware of those who try to take advantage of seniors. "I want to make sure our area seniors have this vital information to protect themselves against financial predators,” said Smith, D-Mt. Lebanon. “This program gives them the know-how to spot a scam and the tools to prevent one.” Smith …

JCC Offering Free Prostate Screenings

Register before now to be screened on Tuesday morning.

The Obediah Cole Foundation and Allegheny County Health Department are teaming up to offer free prostate screenings for men next week. The organizations are offering the prostate-specific antigen blood test for free at the Jewish Community Center in Scott Township. Men interested in the screening must pre-register before the testing begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday. Those interested should contact Chris Gilbert by Monday 412-278-1975 or email at bgilbert@jccpgh.org to register. “We’re pretty happy to be working with the Obediah Cole Foundation,” saild Gilbert, who works with at JCC.
