Congressman Murphy Leads Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak Hearing

The U.S. representative showed up for the hearing in a wheelchair with an apparent sore back.

U.S. Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Upper St. Clair) presided over the Veterans’ Affairs Committee's investigative hearing on the outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh—and he showed up in a wheelchair Tuesday morning. Twitter was abuzz with the news when Washington correspondent of Cox Media Group Seth MacFarlene sent out the tweet: Rep Tim Murphy (R-PA) enters House VA Cmte hearing in wheelchair. Suffering back injury, spokeswoman says. Patch reached out to Murphy's spokeswoman, who was busy with the hearing. Murphy was able to get out of the wheelchair and get into a regular chair during the hearing. Murphy grilled officials about what was done during the Legionnaires’ disease outbreak at the local VA hospital. He posted…

Fire Marshal Investigating Scott Township Blaze

The Allegheny County fire marshal’s office is investigating how a fire started inside a Scott Township home Monday afternoon and why it spread so quickly.

The Allegheny County fire marshal’s office is investigating how a fire started inside a Scott Township home Monday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the home at 119 Bygate Circle shortly after 1 p.m. and found the kitchen and hallway engulfed in flames. “It was rocking pretty good,” Glendale fire Chief Tom Salerno said of the flames. “There was a lot of heat.” Salerno said the home’s resident called them after he found a towel on fire in the kitchen. Moments later, the fire spread to the hallway, causing severe damage to the home, Salerno said. Two Allegheny County fire marshals were at the scene by 2 p.m. after firefighters had contained the blaze. Salerno said they called the Allegheny County fire marshals because firefighters aren’…

State Shuts Down Triangle Pet Control

The McKees Rocks animal control service allegedly defrauded the state by getting paid for services it didn't perform. The company is contracted by Bridgeville, Collier and South Fayette, among several other municipalities.

Triangle Pet Services of McKees Rocks, which works as a contracted animal control service in many local municipalities, has been shut down by the state. KDKA-TV is reporting that the kennel's owner allegedly ordered employees to doctor the books. The state is alleging the owner lied about the number of dogs euthanized, which cost the state in the tens of thousands of dollars. The kennel is also accused of not properly caring for the dogs. According to a Western Pennsylvania Humane Society brochure, Triangle Pet provides services to Collier and South Fayette, among other communities in the region. It's not known what those areas will do while Triangle Pet responds to the charges. Bridgeville previously used Triangle Pet until two months ago…

Cover-Up Reached Highest Levels of Penn State

The Freeh Report concluded that four high-ranking Penn State officials, including Joe Paterno, decided to close ranks on the Sandusky scandal so it wouldn’t hurt the school’s brand.

When Penn State officials learned of disturbing allegations of sexual abuse by Jerry Sandusky in the football training building in February 2001, they initially discussed going to state authorities with the information. But after further discussion–and despite a similar allegation levied against Sandusky three years earlier–the school officials and football coach Joe Paterno instead decided to close ranks and offer him “professional help” while also restricting him from entering school facilities with children. The cover-up continued for another decade with former Penn State President Graham Spanier even refusing to discuss the situation with school Board of Trustees after Sandusky was charged in November 2011. The details that emerged …

Lack of Oversight at Penn State Led to Scandal

The Freeh Report says that the Sandusky scandal revealed “weaknesses of the university culture.”

In the recommendations portion of the report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, investigators admitted that while there were numerous individual failings, “it also reveals weaknesses of the university culture, governance, administration, compliance policies and procedures for protection.” The report indicates that a special investigative unit provided several recommendations to the board and university in January suggesting they reform policies and guidelines related to the protection of children. The university worked on many of those issues—strengthening policies to protect minors, encouraging prompt reporting of incidents of sexual misconduct, conducting abuse-awareness training for all levels of university officials, including top …

With due respect, the headline is simply wrong. The problem with the wrongs at Penn State is not lack of oversight. The problem at Penn State rests solely with the actions of Jerry Sandusky. It was his actions against others that was the wrong in this case. All other suggestions regarding what went wrong are very secondary to Mr. Sandusky's actions. The six points outlined here are fine, but …   more ›

Freeh Report: Penn State Officials Showed 'No Concern' For Victims

Joe Paterno and three other Penn State officials “repeatedly concealed critical facts” about Jerry Sandusky’s contact with young boys.

Four high-ranking Penn State University officials, including legendary football coach Joe Paterno, “repeatedly concealed critical facts” about Jerry Sandusky’s contact with young boys, according to an independent investigation released this morning. The investigation headed by former FBI Director Louis Freeh concluded that Paterno, former president Graham Spanier, former athletic director Tim Curley and former vice president Gary Schultz all knew about a 1998 investigation into Sandusky but showed “no concern about that victim” and took no action against him. “The evidence shows that Mr. Paterno was made aware of the 1998 investigation of Sandusky, followed it closely, but failed to take any action, even though Sandusky had been a key …

Having already gone through the trial, it seems that most details about the child molestations are already public record. What is so surprising with this report is how PSU President Graham Spanier refused to brief the Board of Trustees on details even AFTER charges were filed. He works for them, not the other way around.   more ›

Police Investigating Sexting Case at Chartiers Valley High School

Authorities were alerted to the situation Tuesday afternoon by school officials, who apparently found sexually explicit images on a student’s cell phone.

Collier Township police and the Allegheny County District Attorney’s office are investigating a widespread sexting case at Chartiers Valley High School. Authorities were alerted to the situation Tuesday afternoon by school officials, who apparently found sexually explicit images on a student’s cell phone. Collier police Thomas Devin said they’re in the “early stages” of the investigation, but that it’s becoming clear that numerous students are involved. “It’s one of those things that it starts out as one and just keeps growing,” Devin told Chartiers Valley Patch. “We know there are a couple (students) involved and we’ll be investigating them. As far as this goes, it keeps growing.” He would not say who the students are because of their …

FBI Investigating Pitt Bomb Threats

The Joint Terrorism Task Force is investigating 16 bomb threats made on Pitt's campus in the past month.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force is asking for the public’s help as investigators try to find who is initiating the numerous bomb threats on the University of Pittsburgh’s campus over the past month. David Hickton, who is the U.S. attorney for the Western District of Pennsylvania, said the safety of students, staff and faculty at Pitt are “a top priority” and investigators are working aggressively to stop the multiple bomb threats that are becoming a daily occurrence. He said the Joint Terrorism Task Force and Pitt police are “actively pursuing the source or sources of (the) threats,” but he would not expand on any leads investigators might have.  The campus in Oakland has received at least 16 bomb threats in multiple buildings on …

I can't imagine how frustrating this must be for students. When I was shooting the 911th rally the other night a girl stopped me as I was leaving and asked if there was another bomb threat because the cops where all over the place at the one building behind Soldiers and Sailors. I told I wasn't sure and she just rolled her eyes and said, "well looks like I'm not coming back for class later." When…   more ›
