Not letting the snow keep you cooped up at home? Planning a driving trip today or before the New Year? Pennsylvania State Police in Moon Township offer these tips and suggestions for safe highway travel during this holiday week, when traffic traditionally is heavier than usual: Troopers also remind motorists who are involved in a fender-bender crash to merge safely to the right berm, exchange information there and proceed to their destinations. If a vehicle cannot be driven or someone requires medical attention after a crash, please dial “911” for assistance. _______________________ Forest Hills-Regent Square Patch is on Facebook and on Twitter. They sent him their wish lists, sat on his lap, and left cookies and milk for his arrival. Now the only thing left for children to do is track Santa's progress as he delivers gifts around the world on Christmas Eve. Thanks to the folks behind the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) website, families worldwide can now follow Santa's Christmas journey in real time. The tradition started in 1955 after an advertisement for Sears Roebuck & Co. misprinted a telephone number for a special "Santa hotline." Instead of reaching Kris Kringle, the number put kids through to the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD) Commander-in-Chief’s operations, according to a description on the NORAD Tracks Santa Facebook page, which has more than …

Do you prefer to say "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays?" Find out how Americans responded in a new poll.
Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? When it comes to season’s greetings, a new poll shows the majority of Americans prefer “Merry Christmas” to “Happy Holidays.” The survey from Rasmussen Reports finds that 68 percent of the people polled prefer the traditional “Merry Christmas” while just 23 percent like "Happy Holidays," which can cover a variety of occasions. It doesn’t end there. When it comes to holiday signs, a whopping 70 percent of shoppers polled said they prefer to be greeted with “Merry Christmas” in stores rather than the more neutral Happy Holidays, according to a Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. The so-called “War on Christmas” has been a hot topic for years, with some saying “Merry Christmas” excludes non-…

Hopes may be dashed for anyone dreaming of a white Christmas in Pittsburgh this year. Weather forecasters say no Yuletide snow is on the way. Meteorologist John Darnley, of the National Weather Service in Moon Township, said a storm front moving in through the Midwest is expected to arrive in western Pennsylvania on Christmas Day. Snow isn't on the forecast for the day, but rain is a possibility, he said. "We might actually see some snow Friday night into Saturday morning," Darnley said. "Maybe one to two inches." Darnley said temperatures will cool off on Sunday and Monday, just as a large storm front moving from the middle of the country makes its way to Western Pennsylvania. On Christmas Day, temperatures will pick up, remaining at…

The mother and son were selected as the winners for the contest and will receive two tickets to see ‘The Nutcracker” at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre this month.
A family from Scott Township was selected as the winners for Chartiers Valley Patch’s ‘Nutcracker Tradition’ contest. Eric Barr posted a photo of his son, Jared, with a large nutcracker at the Sweet Shoppe & Nut House in Collier Towns Square. Jared and his mother, Marion, will go to see a performance of ‘The Nutcracker” at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre later this month. The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre's production features more than 210 costumes, 190 performers—including more than 150 students ages 7 and older—and turn-of-the-century Pittsburgh-themed set design. We also had a great photo submitted by Colleen Mutschler with Connor “saluting his favorite nutcracker” at the same Collier Township candy store. Thanks to everyone who participated…
