Big Fundraising Effort Under Way for Dormont's Hollywood Theater

Hollywood Theater in Dormont must raise $75,000 for a digital movie projector, or it faces going dark—possibly for good.

Letting Hollywood Theater’s screen go dark once again isn’t something theater manager Chad Hunter is willing to allow. Unfortunately, that fate is again becoming a real possibility for the Dormont landmark—the only single-screen, independent movie theater in the South Hills—if the theater can’t raise the necessary $75,000 to buy a digital movie projector. “Increasingly, it’s cheaper for studios to produce movies digitally and distribute them that way,” Hunter said. “The writing is on the wall for it … Small theaters are not part of the studios’ financial formula and we’re falling through the cracks.” Hollywood Theater frequently shows movies on 35mm film, a format that used to require 2,000-foot film reels to be shipped and delivered to …

Eat'n Park's Caring for Kids Campaign Breaks Fundraising Record

All-time high amount benefits Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, other children's hospitals.

Eat’n Park Hospitality Group team members and guests have raised a record total of $421,645 for children’s hospitals and charities across Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia during the company’s 34th annual Caring for Kids Campaign. The grand total is an increase of more than 2 percent over the 2011 campaign and is the highest total ever raised in the history of the Caring for Kids Campaign, exceeding the previous record set in 2011 by more than $8,200. A major contribution to the campaign’s total was $154,000 generated by this year’s in-store Ford raffle, shattering previous records of money raised and tickets sold for this fundraiser. Since its inception in 1979, Eat’n Park Hospitality Group’s Caring for Kids Campaign has raised more …

Bridgeville Won’t Expand Library Hours... For Now

Bridgeville Public Library’s reduced hours will remain the same for the rest of the year, although they might be expanded next year.

Bridgeville Public Library’s reduced hours will remain the same for the rest of the year. The library board decided during its Tuesday night meeting to delay a decision on whether to expand operating hours or open the facility an additional day of the week. Joyce Heinrich, who is the library’s new fundraising manager, said they have not received enough donations to extend the hours and the board wants to wait until the end of the year to make a decision. The board discussed in July the possibility of opening the library for four hours Sunday as a way to increase usage from the community. But Heinrich said opening the building on Sundays seems to be unlikely because that usually is the slowest day of the week. Library officials apparently …

Support Grows for Bridgeville Library

Bridgeville Public Library has received growing support and more volunteers in the few months since the community learned it was facing financial problems.

Bridgeville Public Library has received growing support and more volunteers in the few months since the community learned it was facing financial problems. Some people are offering money, others are volunteering their time to help out the library board and one South Fayette man even spent the day cutting the grass with a push mower. “People are willing to do almost anything to help us out,” said Joyce Heinrich, who was hired recently to spearhead fundraising efforts. “That’s what I’m finding while trying to organize all of this.” The library had to slash its staff and operating times in May because of budget and fundraising problems after the new building opened in early 2011. But Heinrich said people from Bridgeville and neighboring …

Bridgeville Library Might Expand Hours

Bridgeville Library officials are considering opening the building up on Sundays after Labor Day.

Bridgeville Public Library officials are considering opening the building up for brief Sunday hours after Labor Day. The library board discussed the possibility during its monthly meeting Tuesday night, but there are still some questions about whether they can afford the extra cost. The library had to slash its staff and operating times from 58 hours a week to 35–the library is now closed Sundays–in May because of budget and fundraising problems after the new building opened in early 2011. But those cuts also are raising concerns that the library is losing patrons and the chance for donors. “You can’t believe how many people are walking up to the door and trying to open it,” new fundraising director Joyce Heinrich said about people coming…

Bridgeville Library Celebrates 50 Years

The Bridgeville Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and officials hope to have a week-long celebration in October.

The Bridgeville Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and officials hope to have a week-long celebration in October. Joyce Heinrich, who is the library’s new fundraising director, said she is planning a book series and quilt show to bring new people into the library and possibly spur donations. Heinrich also showed the board during its Tuesday night meeting an illustration of a sign the library will have installed on the front of the building to celebrate its anniversary in Bridgeville. The board agreed to pay $272 for the sign and installation. Heinrich noted that the library has not planned any special events for the anniversary, so she’s hoping the week-long celebration will help build fundraising momentum. She …

The 50th Anniversary sign for the Library is being paid for by a donor and NOT the Library. I just wanted to clarify that, since the Library is asking for donations and financial help. I don't want people saying the Library is spending money that should be used to help keep the Library open. Cindy   more ›

Bridgeville Library’s Fundraising Plan Never Materialized

The Bridgeville Public Library has not had a clear fundraising plan since the $4 million project began taking shape in 2007. Materialized

The Bridgeville Public Library board met Tuesday night to discuss its situation and how it will raise enough money to keep the new $4 million facility operating. This is the third and final story that will appear this week on Chartiers Valley Patch. The first story was about how fundraising is needed immediately to save the new building, and on Thursday, we examined changes that could be coming to the board. The financial woes facing the Bridgeville Public Library have been years in the making. When the library board planned to build its new building more than five years ago, its members wanted to raise the more than $4 million to pay for construction before it opened. That way, they could worry more about raising money to keep the new …

Bridgeville Must Boost Fundraising to Save Library

Bridgeville must implement a robust fundraising program now to save its brand new $4 million library on McMillen Street.

The Bridgeville Public Library board met Tuesday night to discuss its situation and how it will raise enough money to keep the new $4 million building operating. This is the first of three stories that will appear this week on Chartiers Valley Patch. Follow-up stories about a potential board changes and what led to the staffing cuts will appear later this week. The Bridgeville Public Library must implement a robust fundraising program immediately in order to continue operating in their new building, an accountant told the library board Tuesday night. Lorraine Ruday, the accountant who has been advising the board since the project was conceived several years ago, said the library has enough money to operate in the building until the end of …

"“I feel this community needs to step up, not just financially … but supporting the library in other areas,” Heinrich said." Maybe the library board just needs to live with the consequences of its poor decisions?   more ›
