Frankenstorm has gobbled up Trick-or-Treat for most South Hills communities. The high winds, heavy rain and potential flooding from the remnants of Hurricane Sandy have forced nearly every town to reschedule its Trick-or-Treat times. By 10:30 a.m. Monday, Bridgeville, Collier Township and Heidelberg had already rescheduled their Trick-or-Treat times from Halloween to Saturday night. South Park has rescheduled its Trick-or-Treat to Saturday afternoon. After initially planning to hold Trick-or-Treat on Oct. 31, Scott Township, Mt. Lebanon, Green Tree and Bethel Park all reconsidered and announced that their towns have pushed it back to Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. Town officials in South Fayette also announced that the township would change …

Despite heavy rain from Superstorm Sandy that pounded western Pennsylvania overnight, the Chartiers Creek is holding its banks and causing “no problems.” Heidelberg and Carnegie, both of which sustained heavy flooding when the remnants of Hurricane Ivan rolled through in 2004, reported no rising waters or damage. “No problems, no issues,” Heidelberg Borough Manager Joe Kauer said. “It’s actually kind of cresting. I was taken back by that.” Water gauges placed along the Chartiers Creek near Heidelberg showed the water cresting just above 5 feet around 6 a.m. Tuesday. However, the flood stage for that area of the creek is 20 feet. The creek is noticeably higher than the summer when near drought conditions dried some areas to it sandy bed. …

Heavy rains Sunday afternoon brought flooding, submerging cars and nearly flooding structures.
Heavy rains Sunday afternoon brought high waters to several western Pennsylvania communities, submerging cars and nearly flooding structures. The Chartiers Creek began overflowing its banks around 5 p.m. Sunday and reached a few roads in the East Carnegie neighborhood that straddles Scott Township and Pittsburgh. The water apparently submerged several cars along Idlewood Avenue in the city, although no injuries were reported. East Carnegie Volunteer Fire Department Lt. Walt Maust said that his station along Duncan Avenue was nearly flooded. But the water receded just as quickly as it came. “It came up pretty fast,” he said “but it went down just as fast.” Maust said he did not know of any structures being affected by the water, except for …

Three Allegheny County swiftwater/flood response teams that were deployed to central Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon have already conducted nearly 50 rescues. Each swiftwater/flood response team includes four rescue technicians, swiftwater rescue boat, line-gun with floatable rope attached to a personal floatation device, throwing rings and additional flotation devices. “Our swiftwater response teams have been involved in non-stop rescue missions since arriving in central Pennsylvania yesterday,” Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato said. “The 12 skilled rescue technicians have been working with little rest to assist residents in central Pennsylvania who are dealing with tremendous rainfall and flooding caused by the remnants of …
