Heidelberg's first ever fishing contest along Chartiers Creek was a splashing success. More than 30 kids and 40 parents participated in the Fishing Derby on Saturday and caught plenty of catfish, bass, sunfish and crappy bass. Prizes were awarded to four winners and many others received gifts for the tournament. The borough’s police department, volunteer firefighters and local government officials organized the contest on the banks of the creek that surrounds Heidelberg. “Everyone was a winner, everyone had fun,” Heidelberg police Chief Vernon Barkley said. “Tons of prizes, lots of food and everyone had a great time. Fishing Derby on the Chartiers Creek

Heidelberg is holding its first ever fishing contest along Chartiers Creek on Aug. 11.

Heidelberg is holding its first ever fishing contest along Chartiers Creek. The borough police department, volunteer firefighters and local government officials are organizing the contest Aug. 11 on the banks of the creek that surrounds Heidelberg. Anyone can participate in the contest, although only children 16 years or younger will win prizes. The cost for each child to register is $3 in cash. Registration will be from 6 to 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 11 at the Heidelberg Park pavilion next to the athletic field. Parents must remain with their children during the derby and weigh-in and all participants must have a current state fishing license. “This is a family participation function where spending time with your children can make a difference,” …
