Presto volunteer firefighters spent Thursday teaching Chartiers Valley Primary School students about fire safety.
Laughter filled the air when Sparky, a 7-foot-tall Dalmatian mascot dressed up in a firefighter coat, rolled around the ground to demonstrate how to “Stop, Drop and Roll.” He and a couple other Presto volunteer firefighters spent Thursday afternoon teaching students at Chartiers Valley Primary School fire safety and what to do in an emergency. “These guys are absolutely awesome,” second grade teacher Gretchen Wentz said about the firefighters. “They go out of their way to come up here to help us (teach).” Several classes came out to the school’s parking lot to gawk at Presto’s ladder truck, play with Sparky and ask questions to Smokey The Bear while he rode around in a miniature fire truck. The kids had learned a little bit about fire …

The fire began Saturday morning inside the Universal Stainless Steel plant in Kirwan Heights.
Firefighters responded to a blaze inside an unused section of the Universal Stainless Steel plant in Collier Township over the weekend, but were able to stop it from spreading. Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said crews responded to the fire shortly before noon Saturday and contained it to an old shipping office before it could spread elsewhere. Only the room’s contents, which included a desk, chairs and papers, were destroyed. Workers at the plant noticed smoke billowing from the room and called emergency responders. Firefighters had to locate the fire in the sprawling complex. “It was a smoky fire, so when you came down into the complex, you could see where the fire was coming from,” Lewis said. “It’s a catacomb maze down there.” …
