A fire inside a Scott Township home quickly spread and caused substantial damage to the residence Monday afternoon. Firefighters were called to the home at 119 Bygate Circle just off Swallow Hill Road around 1:14 p.m. after a resident came home and found a towel on fire, Glendale fire Chief Tom Salerno said. He said the fire then quickly spread from the kitchen down the hallway. “It was rocking pretty good,” Salerno said. “There was a lot of heat.” He said firefighters were able to contain the fire quickly, but it still caused “quite a bit of damage.” The Allegheny County fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate. No injuries were reported. Sign up for our Daily E-mail Newsletter or Like the Chartiers Valley Patch Facebook page

CV Holding School Safety Drill

Chartiers Valley students will participate in a “safety drill” Tuesday to prepare them in case of an emergency on the middle/high school campus or nearby in the community.

Chartiers Valley middle and high school students will participate in a “safety drill” Tuesday to prepare them in case of an emergency on campus or nearby in the community. The drill, the details of which were still being finalized Monday afternoon, will involve both students and teachers on how to react should there be an armed intruder inside the building or if it must be locked down for other reasons. The school district notified parents of the safety drill in a letter posted on its website last Friday. Superintendent Brian White Jr. said they will also conduct a “safety visit” to each classroom at the intermediate and primary schools this week. The changes being made makes me happy and a little less stressed about my kids safety. Although, I do feel a criminal can attempt access at any of the buildings doors, not just the main entrance. I’d like to see all possible entry ways protected. Also, the office or security desks should have monitors able to view all entry points. Possibly a metal detector at the main entrances to ensure that …   more ›

Pipeline Blowout Damages Homes

Watch this unbelievable video of a ruptured water pipeline on Carothers Avenue in Scott Township that flooded two homes Tuesday night.

A ruptured water pipeline on Carothers Avenue in Scott Township broke windows and flooded two homes Tuesday night. The major pipeline between Magazine Street and the Glendale Bridge happened around 5:15 p.m. and caused major traffic delays and loss of water service to nearby homes. Rocks and gravel from the rupture went through one window and the water sprayed toward two homes. It eventually flooded the lower levels of the homes with about four inches of water. A video posted onto Chartiers Valley Patch by a reader showed the water rocketing out beneath the pavement and at two houses across the street. Glendale firefighters, whose station is just a few hundred feet from the break, were immediately on scene with vehicles to detour traffic …

Leaking Tanker Truck Causes Lengthy Evacuations Near Carnegie

A leaking tanker truck on Noblestown Road in Collier Township has forced nearby residents to evacuate and PennDOT to close the Carnegie interstate exit. Residents were allowed to return to their homes shortly before 6 p.m.

A leaking tanker truck on Noblestown Road near Carnegie forced nearby residents and workers to evacuate the area for nearly seven hours Wednesday. Collier police stopped the tanker truck, which was leaking an unknown fuel, around 11 a.m. Wednesday as it was heading into Carnegie near the Interstate 79 exit, Kirwan Heights fire Chief Mark Lewis said. The chemical was removed from the tanker and the road was reopened around 5:45 p.m. The problem forced the evacuation of nearby homes in Collier’s Cubbage Hill neighborhood and PennDOT closed the Carnegie exit of I-79. Lewis said the industrial park across from the roadway, which is in Scott Township, was also evacuated. Hazardous material crews were at the scene to transfer what was left of …
