PennDOT is delaying the construction work on Banksville Road in Dormont until next week.
PennDOT is delaying the construction work on Banksville Road in Dormont until next week. The work was scheduled to begin Thursday morning and continue through Monday, but rain showers in the Pittsburgh area pushed construction back a few days. Construction is now expected to begin Monday and continue until Wednesday night. Crews plan to install crosswalk markings at various intersections and pave Helen Street at the intersection with Banksville Road. The northbound lanes of Banksville Road will be restricted from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The southbound lanes will be under construction from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. during the three days of work. PennDOT is asking motorists to be aware of changing traffic patterns during their commutes. The construction is…

A concern about noisy nighttime trash collections in a North Hills community raises a bigger question of whether trash collection, lawn mowing, construction and other noisy activities in Pittsburgh's suburbs should have time limits.
Complaints from residents in a North Hills community have brought to light a problem that many municipalities have faced over time—when to restrict noise-making activities. Noise at night has been the topic of conversation at many board of commissioners and council meetings throughout the Pittsburgh area over the years. Ross Township commissioners are amending an ordinance to restrict the collection of garbage from commercial and/or non-residential areas from 6 a.m. until 7 p.m. Currently, trash collection is not allowed in Ross between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. under an ordinance enacted in 1993. The township's decision was made after residents complained about noisy, night garbage collections near three North Hills School District buildings. …

PennDOT is closing Prestley Road near Presto on Saturday morning for a seven-month construction project to rebuild the bridge carrying traffic over Chartiers Creek. The work to repair the bridge will begin March 9 and is expected to continue through mid-October. The work will replace the bridge deck, install new bearings and make other roadway improvements. “It’s been a band-aid for several years, so it certainly needs the work,” PennDOT spokesman Jim Struzzi said. No thru-traffic will be permitted from Route 50 in Bridgeville to Thoms Run Road in Presto. However, PennDOT officials announced they will install temporary traffic signals between Thoms Run Road and Journey Church. Chartiers Valley school buses will be allowed to continue …

Watch a short video from the scene as crews try to remove the pickup truck from the gap next to the BP gas station in Heidelberg on Monday afternoon.
A driver created quite a scene at the BP gas station in Heidelberg after he crashed his pickup truck into a construction culvert that crews had dug to install new natural gas pipelines and got stuck. Heidelberg police Chief Vernon Barkley said the driver, whom he did not identify but said was from Oakdale and in his 70s, drove around construction cones and into the gas station. While trying to leave, he drove straight into a 3-foot wide gap on the road’s shoulder that crews had cut to install a gas pipeline as part of Heidelberg’s Route 50 streetscape revitalization project. “People have to pay attention when there’s construction,” Barkley said. “They can’t keep zipping around. They have to pay more attention, especially in these …

This year’s PennDOT construction work will include $282 million worth of road and bridge improvement projects. The biggest projects are reconstruction of the Squirrel Hill Tunnels and Liberty Tubes. Find out if the roads you travel on will be fixed.
This year’s PennDOT construction work will include $282 million worth of road and bridge improvement projects that hit every corner of Allegheny County. About half of the money being spent on road projects in the county will be spent on bridge reconstruction. PennDOT District 11 Executive Dan Cessna said during a Friday morning press conference that the “most impactful” project in the Pittsburgh area will be reconstruction of the outbound lanes of the Squirrel Tunnels. That project is expected to cost close to $50 million and will include weekend closures beginning on March 22. There will also be various single-lane closures during nights to allow for work. “You’re going to see a ton of work this summer.” Construction also continues on the…

Boyce Road in South Fayette will be closed three days this week while construction crews replace a 60-year-old water pipeline. The busy road will be closed beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday and probably won’t reopen until Friday. Pennsylvania American Water, which is overseeing the work, announced the road will be closed between Lawn Shadow and Summit Ridge drives. There are posted detours in the areas around Mayview Road and Washington Pike to alert motorists of alternate routes. “This project will address a recent history of breaks and service interruptions caused by this aging main,” PAWC Operations Superintendent Greg Hlasnick said in a press release. “The investment will improve reliability and flows for firefighting.” The $70,000 project…

Presto-Sygan Road, which has been closed several times for construction since early 2011, is finally reopening for good. PennDOT announced the road that connects South Fayette and Collier townships reopened Thursday night after several stints to repair the damaged road surface and nearby bridge. Rainwater runoff washed away one of the lanes in early 2011, forcing PennDOT to install an alternating stop sign that often backed up traffic. After working on that section twice in late 2011 and over this past summer, PennDOT closed another portion to work on a bridge near Thoms Run Road in September. PennDOT scheduled the new reconstruction project immediately after the previous one because workers were concerned of businesses, recreation fields …

Greentree Road will remain open this weekend near Old Washington Pike as construction crews put the finishing touches on roadway rehabilitation project. There will only be minor lane restrictions from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday as crews work on the shoulder of the roadway near Ducky’s Car Wash. Crews are expected to finish the job next weekend. The area had been closed to all traffic the past two weekends so workers could repave the roadway with concrete. The work is part of the $6.8 million reconstruction project of Washington Pike from Bridgeville to Carnegie. Like the Chartiers Valley Patch Facebook page or sign up for our Daily E-mail Newsletter
