Collier's Public Works Garage Getting Solar Panels

Collier Township commissioners approved a new solar paneled roof for the public works building.

Collier Township will soon be home to one of the largest municipal solar arrays in western Pennsylvania. The Board of Commissioners approved plans at its Oct. 10 meeting to install solar panels on the roof of the public works building next month. Township Manager Sal Sirabella says the building is in need of a new roof and solar just made sense. "The state tax credits are expiring on Dec. 31, so the door is going to close for the time being next year,” Sirabella said. “We have to flip a switch by (then) to get the tax credits on the business side." Scalo Solar Solutions of Pittsburgh will install 110 modules that capture energy from the sun and generate electricity to be used by the facility. "They pay for the roof and put in the …

Officer Honored for Saving Man's Life

Collier Township police Officer Dan Elway saved a man's life while vacationing in Florida this summer.

Collier Township police Officer Dan Elway was just minding his own business enjoying the last day of his vacation by the swimming pool in Florida earlier this summer when he heard a woman start to scream nearby. Elway immediately jumped into action and helped pull the woman's fiancé out of the water at the pool in Key Largo. The man wasn't breathing, so Elway did what he was trained to do: He started administering CPR. It was the first time he'd used that training in 10 years of being a police officer. "He was blueish-grey, no breathing, no pulse,” Elway said. “I checked him for about 10 seconds and he didn't have a pulse so I began CPR. I did it for about two minutes and it didn't look good, so I just kept going until the paramedics …
