Security Guard Accused of Providence Point Thefts

Police say a Providence Point security guard is responsible for last year’s rash of burglaries and thefts at the Scott Township retirement home.

Scott Township police say a Providence Point security guard was responsible for last year’s rash of burglaries and thefts at the retirement home. Steven Kowalski, 49, of Baldwin, already has been charged with two counts of burglary along with receiving stolen property and theft after police said they arrested him when he showed up for his evening shift on May 31. Investigators said they received a break in the case earlier that morning when a resident came home to find her deadbolt unlocked and a man hiding behind a chair in her apartment. Police said Kowalski put a cushion over his face and walked past the resident to leave her residence. The resident didn’t see his face, but said he had dark hair and was wearing a white shirt and black …

Scammers Burglarize Homes in Nearby Communities

Police say people are burglarizing homes in the area after telling the owners they are with various companies.

It’s becoming a familiar story—people going door-to-door, participating in a scam situation in which they say they’re with an organization to gain access to your property. Dormont police are investigating one of these situations, which occurred Thursday morning and resulted in the burglary of a home in the 1300 block of Illinois Avenue. Shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday, an elderly couple called Dormont police to report their home had been burglarized. The couple told police a man they described as being Mexican-American came to their home and said he was a property assessment officer from Allegheny County. The man told police the suspect took him to the back of the home to talk about his car, and left after a discussion that lasted about …

Residents Organize Crime Watch Group

The recent crime sprees in Bridgeville and Collier are pushing residents to band together to keep a close eye on their neighborhoods.

The recent vehicle break-in and burglary crime sprees in Bridgeville and Collier has some residents thinking about forming neighborhood watch groups. About a dozen neighbors living on Laurel Street in Bridgeville are organizing a crime watch group and working with the borough police department to protect themselves and their belongings. “We know there are a lot of problems here,” said Freda Bellamy, who is trying to organize the group after a rash of smash and grab thefts on her street. They’re trying to get “Crime Watch” signs installed on the street, but it’s also the sense of community and looking out for one another that they hope will make their neighborhood safer. Bridgeville police said officers don’t organize the groups themselves…

Police Warn of Thefts in Rennerdale

About a dozen car and shed break-ins have been reported in the Rennerdale area this week.

Collier Township police are warning residents to lock their homes, cars and sheds after a string of thefts in the Rennerdale area. Police Chief Thomas Devin said there were about a dozen thefts from sheds and unlocked cars – most occurred Jan. 1 and 2 – over the past week. He said it’s a “crime of opportunity” when people leave valuables in their unlocked vehicles. “Unfortunately, people feel they’re in a safe area and don’t need to lock their doors or cars up,” he said. “It gets to be a prime area for anyone to get into. Don’t leave valuables out. Don’t leave anything in there that you don’t want to lose.” Investigators were able to find foot tracks because of the snowfall those days, but they’re still trying to locate a suspect. Police …
