Ways to Go Greener in, Near Chartiers Valley

Here's a list of some places to take items that should not be sent to landfills or placed at the curb.

Although Earth Day is officially April 22, it's not too early for residents of Bridgeville and Heidelberg boroughs and Collier and Scott townships to begin to look at ways to be more environmentally friendly. The following is a list of items, provided in part by the Allegheny County Health Department, that should not be in landfills and generally aren't collected through municipal recycling. Listed below those items are places at which those items can be disposed/recycled. Pittsburgh Tattoo Artist Finishes Second on 'Ink Master' Reality TV Show

Sarah Miller, owner of Wyld Chyld Tattoo in Brookline, took second place during the finale of Spike TV's "Ink Master" reality television show.

Second place is nothing to scoff at when you're competing nationally, and for that reason, Pittsburgh has another reason to be proud. Tattoo artist Sarah Miller, owner of Wyld Chyld Tattoo on Brookline Boulevard, took second place on Spike TV's tattoo competition reality series "Ink Master" on Tuesday evening. Miller was a contestant on the second season of "Ink Master." The series finale—a live, two-hour special—aired on Spike TV on Tuesday. The title of Ink Master went to artist Steve Tefft of Groton, Conn., who also wins $100,000 and a feature in Inked Magazine. Pittsburgh Crafter Launches ‘I Made It! Market’

Carrie Nardini started “I Made It! Market” to give local crafters more business opportunities. Now the market caters to hundreds of local artists.

Carrie Nardini and Nina Barbuto were at a craft fair at Carnegie Mellon University in 2007 when they began talking about opportunity—or the lack thereof. Both young women are crafters, but at the time there weren’t many places for local people to sell handmade items. The women were on the verge of creating “I Made It! Market,” an organization that now includes hundreds of local crafters, artists and makers. “It was really the resurgence of people selling and wanting handmade things, but there sort of wasn’t anywhere for those makers to go,” Nardini said. “We thought, ‘let’s just make this happen, and make this happen all the time.’” Nardini, 35, of Brookline, is now the director of I Made It! Hot Dog Chef Charged with Bank Heists

Pittsburgh police arrested Captain Barnes, co-owner of Dormont Dogs, in connection with bank robberies in Brookline and South Side.

Pittsburgh police arrested a Dormont restaurant owner in connection with two local bank robberies. Captain Barnes, 37, of Dormont, was taken into custody Wednesday and charged with robbing the branch on Brookline Boulevard on Barnes is the co-owner of . He also will be charged with robbing the Citizens Bank branch located at the Giant Eagle in Pittsburgh's South Side neighborhood Wednesday morning. According to a report by the Pittsburgh police, Barnes walked into the PNC Bank in Brookline around 10:50 a.m. Monday, told a teller he was armed with a gun and demanded $10,000 in cash. After the teller gave him an undisclosed amount, he told the teller not to call the police, and that he had planted a bomb in the bank. He then fled on foot. On…

Candlelight Vigil Remembers Lost Friend

Friends of Karissa Kunco gathered in her hometown of Brookeline Thursday night to remember her.

The usually bustling intersection at Brookline Boulevard United Presbyterian Church was quiet Thursday night, as a crowd gathered to honor a lost friend.  “People say things about smiles that light up rooms, but it’s the truth with her,” said Tom Pisano, Karissa Kunco’s former softball coach. Kunco, a 21-year-old Brookline native, was remembered in an impromptu vigil held by friends just hours after news of her death was made public. She was reported missing Wednesday night after leaving her job, and was found stabbed to death Thursday evening near Hickory in Washington County. Police are questioning Kunco’s ex-boyfriend, Jordan Clemons, who was found late Thursday night. News of Kunco’s death hit the tight-knit Brookline community hard…
