Bridgeville Library Might Expand Hours

Bridgeville Library officials are considering opening the building up on Sundays after Labor Day.

Bridgeville Public Library officials are considering opening the building up for brief Sunday hours after Labor Day. The library board discussed the possibility during its monthly meeting Tuesday night, but there are still some questions about whether they can afford the extra cost. The library had to slash its staff and operating times from 58 hours a week to 35–the library is now closed Sundays–in May because of budget and fundraising problems after the new building opened in early 2011. But those cuts also are raising concerns that the library is losing patrons and the chance for donors. “You can’t believe how many people are walking up to the door and trying to open it,” new fundraising director Joyce Heinrich said about people coming…

Bridgeville Library Celebrates 50 Years

The Bridgeville Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and officials hope to have a week-long celebration in October.

The Bridgeville Public Library is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and officials hope to have a week-long celebration in October. Joyce Heinrich, who is the library’s new fundraising director, said she is planning a book series and quilt show to bring new people into the library and possibly spur donations. Heinrich also showed the board during its Tuesday night meeting an illustration of a sign the library will have installed on the front of the building to celebrate its anniversary in Bridgeville. The board agreed to pay $272 for the sign and installation. Heinrich noted that the library has not planned any special events for the anniversary, so she’s hoping the week-long celebration will help build fundraising momentum. She …

The 50th Anniversary sign for the Library is being paid for by a donor and NOT the Library. I just wanted to clarify that, since the Library is asking for donations and financial help. I don't want people saying the Library is spending money that should be used to help keep the Library open. Cindy   more ›

Photos: Bridgeville Library 'Summer Sounds' Concert

Check out our photo gallery to see who attended Saturday night's charity concert at the Bridgeville Public Library.

Nearly a hundred people spent Saturday night listening to good music at the new Bridgeville Public Library. The library fundraiser pre-sold at least 50 tickets and more people were streaming in through the doors during the charity concert by Kim Losego and his band. Joyce Heinrich, who is the library’s new fundraising organizer, welcomed the crowd and said events like these will expand the uses of the building and make it more of a community center. “The Bridgeville Library has evolved into something more than just a place to borrow books,” Heinrich said. “We have a chance to build this library into something more.” Local businesses such as Burgh’s, Serafina’s, Cupcakes ‘n At and Philly Pretzel Factory brought food for the event. Many town…

Bridgeville Library’s Fundraising Plan Never Materialized

The Bridgeville Public Library has not had a clear fundraising plan since the $4 million project began taking shape in 2007. Materialized

The Bridgeville Public Library board met Tuesday night to discuss its situation and how it will raise enough money to keep the new $4 million facility operating. This is the third and final story that will appear this week on Chartiers Valley Patch. The first story was about how fundraising is needed immediately to save the new building, and on Thursday, we examined changes that could be coming to the board. The financial woes facing the Bridgeville Public Library have been years in the making. When the library board planned to build its new building more than five years ago, its members wanted to raise the more than $4 million to pay for construction before it opened. That way, they could worry more about raising money to keep the new …

Bridgeville Must Boost Fundraising to Save Library

Bridgeville must implement a robust fundraising program now to save its brand new $4 million library on McMillen Street.

The Bridgeville Public Library board met Tuesday night to discuss its situation and how it will raise enough money to keep the new $4 million building operating. This is the first of three stories that will appear this week on Chartiers Valley Patch. Follow-up stories about a potential board changes and what led to the staffing cuts will appear later this week. The Bridgeville Public Library must implement a robust fundraising program immediately in order to continue operating in their new building, an accountant told the library board Tuesday night. Lorraine Ruday, the accountant who has been advising the board since the project was conceived several years ago, said the library has enough money to operate in the building until the end of …

Task Force Hoping to Help Bridgeville Library

A task force is forming and will consider all options on how the area can help the Bridgeville Public Library after it was forced to make major cuts to its operating hours and staff.

A task force is forming to consider all options on how the area can help the Bridgeville Public Library after it was forced to make major cuts to its operating hours and staff. Marilyn Jenkins, who is Allegheny County Library Association’s executive director, said they are working to bring people together to find solutions to save the library after it was forced to make significant cutsbacks, but she admitted there are no easy answers. She said the library might have to reach out to neighboring communities for help and “leverage resources” to continue operating in the new $4 million building on McMillen Street. “I think they’re facing an enormous challenge if they’re going to try to fix it on their own,” Jenkins said. “They’re going to …

Costly New Building is the Reason for Bridgeville Library's Problems

Michael Aquilina III, who grew up in Bridgeville, wrote a letter to the editor responding to claims that the library is struggling because of a lack of volunteers.

To the editor: I'm writing in regard to Bridgeville Public Library board member Nino Petrocelli's comment in Tuesday’s story on Chartiers Valley Patch (Bridgeville Library Facing Big Cutbacks) regarding the library's need to cut hours and layoff staff. While I greatly respect Mr. Petrocelli's contributions to the Bridgeville area over the years, his comment that "not one person" in Bridgeville has stepped up to help the library is false. The library does, in fact, have a dedicated group of volunteers who regularly donate time, effort and money to help the library with their operations and programming. These volunteers include several of my friends and family, and I'm shocked that Mr. Petrocelli would gloss over the existence of this …

Bridgeville Library Facing Major Cutbacks

A lack of volunteers and donations is forcing the Bridgeville Public Library to drastically cut back its hours beginning May 1.

A lack of volunteers and donations is forcing the Bridgeville Public Library to drastically cut back its hours beginning May 1. The library is cutting its hours by nearly half and now will be open only 35 hours a week, which is the minimum to still be able to accept state funding. The decision to reduce the hours is especially disappointing because the brand new $4 million library opened less than 16 months ago and a new entrance to the McMillen Street building was paved recently. Nino Petrocelli Sr., who is the borough council’s president and member of the library board, said volunteers and donations are the lifeblood for any library. But Bridgeville Public Library is having trouble getting interest from the community to offer help or …

Used Bookstores Offer Unique Finds

Local used bookstores thrive on unique offerings and great service.

Used bookstores are like mushrooms, according to Frank Oreto. They tend to pop up everywhere. Getting them started is easy, he said, but the trick is finding the niche that will keep them going with giants like Barnes & Noble right down the road. Oreto and Jamie Grassman, both used bookstore owners in Dormont, are writing the book (so to speak) on surviving when the economy, competition and advertising costs seem to work against small businesses. “It doesn’t cost much to start a used bookstore,” said Oreto, co-owner of Eljay’s Used Books on West Liberty Avenue. “A lot of them come and go though.” Oreto moved his 15-year-old business from Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood to Dormont about a year ago. The larger West Liberty storefront …

It's Official: Summer is Here!

It's the longest day of the year, but you wouldn't know it with all these clouds.

Whether it’s the beach or a porch-view vacation, everyone is ducking out of work early to spend a little more time in the sun. It’s Pittsburgh. We have to take what we can get. The summer solstice reminds us, “If you haven’t started celebrating summer yet … get cracking!” The summer solstice is a Latin word which breaks down to sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). When the sun hits its southernmost extreme it appears to be standing still.  It’s all about the sun's path (or rather Earth’s rotational path around the sun). This year, it will happen precisely on June 21 at 17:16 (5:16 p.m.). It’s winter solstice in Australia, but on December 21 it will all be flipped and they will have summer while we have winter.  It’s recognized worldwide…
