Bridgeville and South Fayette’s library boards have both agreed to begin discussing whether they can work closely together and share services.
Bridgeville and South Fayette’s library boards have both agreed to begin discussing whether they can work closely together and share services. Bridgeville Public Library’s board voted earlier this year to initiate discussions and South Fayette’s library board agreed to the idea at its meeting last month. EDITOR’S NOTE: This reporter is a member of the South Fayette Township Library Board It’s not known what, if anything, the two libraries could do to improve cooperation and share services, but Allegheny County Library Association Executive Director Marilyn Jenkins said the they could implement pioneering ideas for the area. “I think it’s a great opportunity for libraries to leverage the resources they have more effectively,” Jenkins said…

Bridgeville Public Library is expanding its operating hours and will now be open on Mondays. The library’s Board of Directors agreed this month to reopen the library from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Monday beginning on March 4. The board said feedback from library patrons prompted it to expand the hours. Library officials acknowledged there still is a funding issue and they hope to raise money to pay for the additional hours. The library had to slash its staff and operating times from 58 hours a week to 35 in May 2012 because of budget and fundraising problems after the new building opened in early 2011. But the board said late last year that it was concerned the library was losing patrons and the chance for donations with the cuts. They …

The annual Festival of Trees is returning to Bridgeville this weekend with numerous decorated trees, raffles, food and Santa Claus performing magic. The weekend fundraiser at the Bridgeville Fire Department's Chartiers Room supports the library and will have more than 30 personalized trees designed by area businesses and residents. Betty Copeland, who is the chairperson for the ninth annual event, said each tree carries the personality of the business or person who entered it into the competition. She pointed to a Punxsutawney Phil Christmas tree by the "Outer Circle Groundhog Club" as an example of one of the trees that will be displayed this weekend. “It’s amazing the themes they come up with,” Copeland said. Other contestants include …

Bridgeville Public Library officials plan to meet with their counterparts in South Fayette soon to see if the two groups can share or improve services for their patrons. The two sides are still trying to figure out a date when they can meet to discuss whether there are mutual benefits to combine activities, collections, accounting services or events. Allegheny County Library Association Executive Director Marilyn Jenkins attended Bridgeville library’s Tuesday night board meeting to see if her organization could facilitate a meeting or the merging of some services. She said other libraries across Allegheny County are in the process of submitting proposals on how to improve their own programming or change working relationships with …

Bridgeville Public Library’s reduced hours will remain the same for the rest of the year. The library board decided during its Tuesday night meeting to delay a decision on whether to expand operating hours or open the facility an additional day of the week. Joyce Heinrich, who is the library’s new fundraising manager, said they have not received enough donations to extend the hours and the board wants to wait until the end of the year to make a decision. The board discussed in July the possibility of opening the library for four hours Sunday as a way to increase usage from the community. But Heinrich said opening the building on Sundays seems to be unlikely because that usually is the slowest day of the week. Library officials apparently …

Bridgeville's library board President Nino Petrocelli Sr. will resign from his seat at the end of September. The long-time board member told Chartiers Valley Patch during a phone interview Thursday that he’s proud of the new library and the many amenities it offers the community and residents. He announced his retirement from the board at its monthly meeting Tuesday night. Petrocelli was instrumental in construction of the new library, although it has dealt with difficult financial problems ever since it opened in January 2011. “I see so many good programs,” Petrocelli said. “So many kids and adults enjoy our programs. My final wish is we should do everything in our power to keep this beautiful library in our community. It’s not only a …

Bridgeville Public Library has received growing support and more volunteers in the few months since the community learned it was facing financial problems. Some people are offering money, others are volunteering their time to help out the library board and one South Fayette man even spent the day cutting the grass with a push mower. “People are willing to do almost anything to help us out,” said Joyce Heinrich, who was hired recently to spearhead fundraising efforts. “That’s what I’m finding while trying to organize all of this.” The library had to slash its staff and operating times in May because of budget and fundraising problems after the new building opened in early 2011.
