Spencer Stefko has resigned from his position as the Chartiers Valley Lady Colts basketball coach, according to The Almanac. Stefko submitted his resignation to Chartiers Valley’s athletic director Frank Vulcano Jr. on Friday stating he thought a new person was needed to coach the girls’ basketball team, according to The Almanac. The decision is puzzling because it comes on the heels of a season in which the Lady Colts advanced to the WPIAL championship game for the first time in school history. The girls lost to Bethel Park in the championship game. The Chartiers Valley Lady Colts held off a furious comeback from Shaler to advance in the WPIAL basketball playoffs with a razor-thin 31-29 victory. The CV girls’ basketball team held a 15-12 lead at halftime during their first-round AAAA playoff game against the Titans at North Hills High School. They dominated Shaler in the third quarter, appearing to blow open the game with a 24-12 lead going into the final quarter. But the Titans mounted a furious comeback in the fourth quarter and trailed by 26-24 with a minute remaining in the game. But Chartiers Valley was able to hold on for a 31-29 win. The Chartiers Valley boys’ basketball team is the No. 1 seed in the WPIAL AAA playoffs and will have a bye week, while the girls play Shaler this Friday night at North Hills.
The Chartiers Valley boys’ basketball team is the No. 1 seed in the WPIAL AAA playoffs. The boys’ team (20-3, 11-1) won the AAA’s Section 5 title and will have the weekend off as the top seed in the playoffs. They are scheduled to play on Feb. 19 against the winner of Friday night’s game between Mt. Pleasant and Knoch. If the Colts win that game, they could have a rematch against division rival South Fayette. Meanwhile, the girl’s team (16-6, 8-4) will play Shaler at 6:30 p.m. Friday at North Hills High School. Kristina Coyne, the multi-sport star who kicked on the varsity football team and played four other sports, is expected to sign onto an athletic scholarship at the college this week.
Kristina Coyne, the multi-sport star who kicked on the varsity football team and played four other sports, is expected to sign an athletic scholarship at Eastern Michigan University. She plans to compete in track at the college in Ypsilanti, MI, just a few miles away from Ann Arbor, Chartiers Valley Athletic Director Frank Vulcano Jr. said. She will officially sign her national letter of intent Wednesday morning in the High School Athletic Conference Room. Besides serving as the football team’s place kicker the past three years, Kristina also played volleyball, basketball and competed in track and field. The Lady Colts won 62-42 and will play again Saturday.
WEXFORD – The Chartiers Valley Lady Colts used a fast start on offense and stifling defense inside to easily defeat Beaver 62-42 in their opening round WPIAL playoff game at North Allegheny High School. Jenna Devinney hit three 3-pointers in the first two-and-half minutes of the game and helped Chartiers Valley run out to a 15-3 lead. The event took place in the high school gym and was enjoyed by all in attendance. The event was sponsored by the Chartiers Valley Intermediate School PTG, and included concessions, Spirit Wear, a Chinese auction and souvenirs by the Harlem Wizards.
