Several felony theft charges have been dropped against a mechanic accused of bilking the Collier Township auto repair shop where he worked. Investigators withdrew three felony theft charges and four misdemeanor theft counts against Matthew R. Jankowski, 30, of Whitehall, before his Oct. 15 preliminary hearing. However, Jankowski waived to trial three felony charges of theft by deception at his preliminary hearing before District Judge Maureen McGraw-Desmet. Collier police alleged that Jankowski stole nearly $50,000 worth of parts and labor from the Mr. Tire retailer in Kirwan Heights during a five-month period from December to May. A volunteer firefighter faces numerous theft charges after investigators said he stole nearly $50,000 worth of parts and labor from the Kirwan Heights tire retailer where he was working. Matthew R. Jankowski, 30, faces six felony theft charges and four misdemeanor theft counts after Collier Township police arrested him last month and accused him of ripping off Mr. Tire on Washington Pike. Jankowski recently was the vice president of the Baldwin Independent Fire Co. The former assistant manager at Mr. Tire Auto Service is accused of stealing nearly $49,792 worth of parts and labor from the business during a five-month period from December to May. Dozens of cases of the West Nile virus have been found in mosquitoes around western Pennsylvania over the past two months, but no humans have been infected yet. Allegheny, Washington, Beaver and Fayette counties are currently considered “high risk” areas in Pennsylvania, according to state regulators. Three cases were pinpointed in the Bridgeville area in the past month–most recently on July 26 and July 21–and another case was found in a mosquito in Collier Township on June 21, according to state records. Other areas that have been impacted are the city of Pittsburgh with dozens of reports and nine cases in Wilkinsburg since July 3.
